The National Map Corps

Important Notice Concerning The National Map Corps:

The National Map Corps was founded originally as The Earth Science Corps and administered from the Mapping Applications Center in Reston, Virginia. The intent of the program was to engage volunteers in the production of 1:24:000-scale topographic maps. The role of Earth Science Corps volunteers was to identify and annotate information that could be incorporated into future topographic map revisions. In 2001 operational control for The Earth Science Corps moved to the Mid-Continent Mapping Center, now part of the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC) in Rolla, Missouri.

Because of reengineering of the NGTOC and realignment of program priorities, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) management has decided to reassess the volunteer effort to determine how its activities can be effectively integrated into The National Map processes. For now, The National Map Corps will be suspended temporarily until an evaluation of the volunteer effort and process can be completed. The evaluation is expected to be completed by mid-February 2009, and some programs decisions by the end of March 2009. At this time, we are not taking applications. Changes to this policy will be posted as they occur.

The USGS and geospatial community greatly appreciates the efforts and contributions of The National Map Corps during its more than 8 years of progress and look forward to positive volunteer involvement in the future.
