Project alters course of river
(Statesman-Journal)

A $1.2 million project at Willamette Mission State Park soon will allow the Willamette River to flow through a 2-mile channel blocked by a dike since the 1940s. It is one of a handful of key restoration projects identified by the state for partially returning the Willamette River to its historical meandering course. The idea is to undo what has been done to rivers for the past 150 years: forcing them to flow in a single, predictable channel. …Smaller channels allow water to slow down and cool, which is needed by native fish, particularly salmon. "It will help young fish as they migrate down the river and out to the lower Columbia and ocean," said Stan Gregory, aquatic ecologist with the department of fisheries and wildlife at Oregon State University. "When they migrate down in the middle of the river, they don't want to go flying down to the ocean. They need to seek refuge in slow-velocity waters and slip into those channels. And then it is also important for migrating adult salmon as they go upstream because it allows them resting places."

OVP Venture Partners leaves one officer in Portland
(The Oregonian)

OVP Venture Partners, Oregon's most visible venture capital firm, will have only one officer staffing its Portland operation when 2009 begins. The firm announced that Intel alum John Hull is stepping down at the end of December "to pursue other interests." Prominent Portland venture capitalist David Chen left OVP last year to focus on investments in sustainable industries. Venture capital is the seed money that helps startups grow. OVP, which has offices in Portland and Kirkland, Wash., has been among Oregon's most active venture investors for several years dating back to the early 1990s. …Three directors from OVP's Kirkland office are active with Oregon organizations that promote new technologies and business concepts -- including Oregon State University and the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute, or ONAMI.

Panel: Corvallis at a population crossroads
(Gazette-Times)

With a burgeoning population of retirees, a growing number of students at Oregon State University and not much in the middle, Corvallis is at a crossroads. So said a panel of work force and community experts Monday during a discussion on the topic “Macro Trends, Micro Impacts,” at a meeting of the Corvallis City Club. The Corvallis City Club is the local chapter of a national organization that periodically brings together a broad range of people to talk about local civic, social and business issues. Christopher Klemm, director of the Austin Entrepreneurship Program at OSU, described Corvallis as a “city without a middle,” in that working families, including newly minted college graduates, aren’t choosing to live here. “There is a huge pool of interesting young people who come here,” he said. “We have not been able to capture them or provide anything interesting for them.” Monday’s panel was composed of Klemm, Pat O’Connor, regional economist for the Oregon Employment Department, and Terryl Ross, director of community and diversity for Oregon State University.

Tree farmer pledges $1 million to OSU scholarships
(Capital Press, Associated Press, Register-Guard, KTVZ-TV)

Hal Schudel of Holiday Tree Farm in Corvallis, Ore., and his wife, Lois, have pledged $1 million to Oregon State University for scholarships. Schudel said in a prepared statement that he has not forgotten a $500 scholarship awarded him during the Great Depression that helped him achieve a bachelor's degree at University of Nebraska. Later he received a fellowship at OSU, where he earned a doctorate. Holiday Tree Farms is the largest Christmas tree farm in the world. "I know what scholarships did for me personally, and I know what challenges young people are facing today," Schudel said. "There are some great kids out there, but they need to be given a little boost, so they, too, can follow their dreams." The story ran Friday in the Gazette-Times, as well.
