Tree grower pledges $1M to OSU
(Gazette-Times)

Hal Schudel, the founder of Holiday Tree Farms — the largest Christmas tree grower in the world — has together with his wife, Lois, pledged $1 million to Oregon State University for agricultural scholarships. A former OSU agronomist, Schudel has not forgotten how he got his start. A $500 scholarship during the Depression helped him earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska. A fellowship to OSU enabled him to earn his doctorate. “I know what scholarships did for me personally, and I know what challenges young people are facing today,” Schudel said. “There are some great kids out there, but they need to be given a little boost, so they, too, can follow their dreams.”

Climate change hits growers
(Capital Press)

The cooler summer farmers and others experienced in the Lower Umatilla Basin of Oregon has led some to scoff at the idea of global warming or climate change. George Clough, a horticulturist at the Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center for the past 15 years, says there's overarching scientific evidence climate change is real, but he also stresses there's a distinct difference between weather and climate. Clough believes global warming - climate change - is real because of the evidence scientists have found in Antarctic ice core samples. One of Clough's colleagues at Oregon State University, Edward Brook, an associate professor of geosciences, in May wrote a commentary on the new studies in the journal Nature. He said the newest analysis of trace gases trapped in Antarctic ice cores provide a reasonable view of greenhouse gas concentrations into the past, and further confirm the link between greenhouse gas levels and global warming.

OSU diversity efforts win national award
(Gazette-Times)

Oregon State University’s commitment to promote diversity on campus has received a national “best practices” award for college programs. Terryl Ross, director of OSU’s Office of Community and Diversity, accepted the “Committed to Diversity” Award recently from Minority Access, a Washington, D.C.-area nonprofit working to expand minority involvement in education, employment and research. About 30 universities and colleges received the 2008 honor. OSU and its fellow awardees “genuinely seem to appreciate the value of diversity in creating a well-rounded educational experience,” said Andrea D. Mickle, president of Minority Access.
