Hydraulic Design Section
Who we are
The Portland District Hydraulic Design Section is a group of 12 Hydraulic Engineers and 1 Technician. Collectively, we boast 8 Professional Engineers with 7 advanced degrees in engineering including 2 PhD's. We work together to provide hydraulic engineering solutions to a wide range of engineering challenges in the Columbia and Willamette River Basins and throughout the region.
What we do
Our specific functions vary widely, but include the following:
- Perform hydraulic design of structures and consulting service on wide variety of hydraulic problems.
- Provide technical assistance and hydraulic design support during planning, design, construction and monitoring of fish passage facilities.
- Design and perform field prototype tests and investigations to evaluate hydraulic adequacy & performance and to diagnose problems at existing projects.
Manage complex, diverse and multi-disciplinary product delivery teams including management of AE contracts and consultants. - Provide technical guidance, procurement, consultation and review of physical model studies at Waterways Experiment Station and contract labs.
- Procure, review and develop 1D, 2D and 3D numerical models to aid in design and operation of project facilities, especially related to fish passage.
- Inspect and evaluate hydraulic features of projects for dam safety and rehabilitation purposes.
- Extensive flow measurement capabilities including acoustic scintillation flow measurements in turbine intakes, Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter and Price AA and Pygmy Current Meter measurements.
- Design intake towers, spillways and outlet works including modifications to existing structures.
- Design temperature control towers and facilities.
- Peform navigation lock inspections and provide design and technical assistance for navigation lock emptying/filling systems.
- Design and analyze fish screens, fish ladders and control sections, and culverts/bridges for fish passage.
- Provide hydraulic support for biological field testing and analysis.
- Support to other Districts and agencies through independent technical review and technical assistance/consulting.
Experience and Expertise
Hydraulic Design offers a broad range of engineering and design experience, coupled with a long sucessful history of working with other Corps resources (Districts, Waterways Experiment Station and the Hydroelectric Design Center) and the Architectural engineering community. Portland District currently has several multidisciplinary open-end contracts for engineering services.
