CAROL BROWNER AN OUTSTANDING CHOICE FOR OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

Statement of John Flicker, President, National Audubon Society

New York, NY, December 15, 2008 - "Carol Browner is an outstanding choice to direct the integration of energy and environmental policy and to reposition the U.S. as a leader in addressing global warming. No one is better suited to addressing these challenges than Carol Browner. As the very successful and longest serving administrator of the EPA, Carol Browner has a proven track record of success. She is a skilled and pragmatic leader who gets results.

"Throughout his campaign and in forming his administration, President-elect Obama has made clear that he is committed to protecting the environment and shifting our nation toward a clean energy economy that creates jobs and reduces global warming. Entrusting Carol Browner to implement those policies sends a strong signal that balance and sound judgment will guide the new administration. We applaud Mr. Obama and look forward to working closely with Carol in the months and years to come."

MORE INFORMATION

Carol Browner has been a member of the Board of Directors of the National Audubon Society since December, 2001, and has served as Chair of the Board since December, 2003.

She served as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under President Clinton.

President-elect Obama announced Ms. Browner will serve in a newly created senior role. Last month Mr. Obama named Ms. Browner to a key post on his transition team.

Her position is one of several environmental selections Mr. Obama has recently announced, including physicist Steven Chu as energy secretary, New Jersey governor Jon Corzine's chief of staff Lisa Jackson as head of the New Jersey Environmental Protection Agency, and Los Angeles deputy mayor Nancy Sutley as head of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. A recent New York Times editorial called Mr. Obama's environmental appointments "admirable" and that they were "heartened" by Ms. Browner's new role.

Now in its second century, Audubon connects people with birds, nature and the environment that supports us all. Our national network of community-based nature centers, chapters, scientific, education, and advocacy programs engages millions of people from all walks of life in conservation action to protect and restore the natural world.
