Anacostia and Your Community’s History

This information on the Anacostia community, which is located in southeast Washington, D.C., is designed to guide you on an exciting journey into local history research. You can learn many wonderful things about any community that you choose to discover—maybe even your own.

Early HousesSelect a community. Have you ever wondered who lives, or lived, in the area? Do you know where the business district is located? Have important historical events taken place in the community?

These and other questions can be answered as you complete this fun activity!

The top of each section discusses the vibrant Anacostia community and some of the many interesting places found within its borders. At the bottom of each section you will find a research activity that will allow you to document the people, places, and events in your chosen community. The links to these activities appear in boxes like this one here.

Each section also contains special words that are highlighted in red. Do you know what they mean? If not, look them up and write down their definitions. As you go through the sections and complete the activities, remember to talk with your family and friends. They might even be able to help you conduct your research.

Funding for this web site was made possible by a grant from the Smithsonian Women's Committee.
