How To Qualify

The OIG hires entry-level professionals. Their educational backgrounds typically include graduate or undergraduate degrees in public and business administration, economics, accounting, criminal justice and health care administration. There are four basic career tracks;

  • auditor,
  • special agent,
  • health systems specialist, and
  • management analyst.

Auditor

  • Bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in accounting, finance, business or public administration which includes 24 semester hours in accounting. The 24 hours may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law. One or more years of professional accounting experience may be substituted for education to qualify. Certification as a CPA will also be considered. This experience must reflect knowledge of the theories and practices of accounting, auditing, and financial reporting; knowledge of the laws and regulations governing accounting, auditing, and financial reporting; knowledge of ADP concepts; the ability to communicate orally and in writing; and the ability to work with a variety of people in a team environment.

Special Agent

  • Bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree; or
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in general investigations; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education, college-level, analogous to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year college curriculum as above.

Health Systems Specialist

  • Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in health care or public administration of related field such as business administration with course work in health administration; plus
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in the health care field. This experience should reflect knowledge of the fundamental concepts of health care delivery systems, knowledge of the regulations and standards of various regulatory and credentialing groups, the ability to communicate orally and in writing, and the ability to work with a variety of people in a team environment.

Management Analyst

  • Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university; or
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
