The SunWise Monitor Newletter

May 2008 -- The SunWise Monitor (PDF) (8 pp, 1.2 MB, About PDF) is a newsletter about SunWise program activities. The latest issue, Spring 2008, includes stories about a sun safety poster contest, Disney Radio, sunscreen container labels, and many other articles.

SunWise Goes State-wide in Wisconsin

May 2007 -- Third-graders from Northside Elementary School, Sun Prairie, Wis., got a special lesson in sun safety on May 15 from State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster and representatives from Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Wisconsin’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Program and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This event kicked off a statewide effort to make Wisconsin a “SunWise State.” Read the Press Release.

Pierce County, WA (Tacoma) Proclaims "SunWise Day"

May 2007 -- In an effort to encourage County residents to adopt sun-safe behaviors, Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg proclaimed May 7 "SunWise Day" in Pierce County. This proclamation is part of Pierce County’s participation in SunWise Communities, a program developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that extends sun safety education through school- and community-based programs. The announcement also coincides with both Melanoma Monday and the start of National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Prevention Month in May. Read the Press Release.

SunWise Promotes Sun Safety on Radio Disney

May 2007 -- Radio Disney kicked off Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month and the summer by airing a sun safety show on their Boston (AM 1260), Orlando (AM 990) and Seattle (AM 1250) stations. In addition, a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) will air throughout the summer starring Sabrina from the Cheetah Girls.

SunWise Day at Fenway Park 2006

July 2006 -- The Boston Red Sox hosted the New England awards ceremony for the annual SunWise with SHADE Poster Contest. The winner for the region threw out the first pitch of the game, and got the opportunity to meet Red Sox Pitcher Curt Schilling. SunWise with SHADE is an annual educational poster contest put on by the SHADE Foundation of America and EPA’s SunWise Program. During the four years the contest has been held, over 40,000 students have submitted posters. Read the Press Release.

SunWise wins 2006 Gold Triangle Award for UV Alert

June 2006 -- The American Academy of Dermatology recently announced the recipients of the 2006 Gold Triangle Awards Exit EPA disclaimer and the SunWise Program has won an award for the UV Alert. The prestigious Gold Triangle Awards salute winners from health community organizations, the media, industry, and public service, as well as individual effort for excellence in promoting public awareness about dermatology and encouraging healthy behavior in the care of the skin, hair and nails among the public. 

Key Findings on Vitamin D Announced

May 2006 -- National health groups today announced key findings from the first North American conference on UV, Vitamin D and Health, which took place in Toronto in March. The groups also identified areas where more research is needed about this topic. For more information, please see the press release Exit EPA disclaimer .

Make Sun Safety Your Goal!® 2006 Launched

May 2006 -- Make Sun Safety Your Goal!® is a public education program designed to raise awareness about the simple, everyday steps soccer players and their fans can take to prevent skin cancer.  The program is conducted through a public service partnership among the American Academy of Dermatology, Major League Soccer (MLS), the U.S. Soccer Foundation (Foundation) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). King County, WA (Seattle) Becomes SunWise

May 2006 -- King County Executive Ron Simms declared May 1st a SunWise Day in King County, WA. King County is the 14th largest county in the country and includes Seattle. SunWise Communities builds on the successful SunWise Cities piloted in Houston, TX in 2005.

SunWise with SHADE Poster Contest Begins

March 2006 -- SunWise and the SHADE Foundation of America have partnered to bring you the annual SunWise with SHADE Poster contest. 14 states are participating in the contest this year, and the national winner will get a free trip to Disney World.

UV Alerts Introduced

August 2005 -- EPA now issues a UV Alert when the risk of over-exposure to UV radiation is unusually high. The alert includes simple action steps to reduce the risk. EPA and the National Weather Service jointly developed the UV Alert system.

Houston Becomes the First SunWise City

August 2005 -- Houston, Texas, became the first SunWise City in a public ceremony led by the mayor. SunWise Cities is a new program to raise public awareness to the importance of sun-safe behaviors for preventing skin damage due to over-exposure to UV radiation.

SunWise Announces Recognition Program

January 2005 -- SunWise is pleased to announce the third annual recognition program, highlighting schools, educators, and organizations that are doing exemplary "SunWise" work.

SunWise in The Weather Channel's Forecast Earth Segment

September 2003 -- Several video segments were created recently through a partnership between EPA and The Weather Channel, one of which contains information on SunWise and the health effects of overexposure to UV radiation. This segment aired on The Weather Channel cable network as part of their new Forecast Earth series. Click here to download the video segment.

SunWise Receives "Excellence in Cancer Awareness" Award

September 2003 -- The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation Exit EPA disclaimer has given the SunWise Program their "Excellence in Cancer Awareness" Award for their successful partnership with the SHADE Foundation. Exit EPA disclaimer The award honors corporate leaders, athletes, and organizations who are dedicated to cancer prevention and early detection.
