Entry bubble Winter Colds and Flu

a mid adult man sneezing into tissue

My nose is running, my ears are clogged and I’m coughing. Ah yes, the beginning of another cold and flu season is upon us. Every other week my daughter brings home a new and exciting virus from the germ factory (that’s how I like to refer to the elementary school at this time of year). Bailey brings home the cold and is sick for a few days, then her little sister picks it up and she’s sick for a few days and it seems like my husband and I are constantly battling a virus. Sometimes we get it and sometimes we don’t. Does this sound like your house? I suppose we’re not alone.

It's important to know the difference between colds and flu and try to prevent colds and flu by following the advice of the experts. I eat really well, exercise, drink plenty of fluids and even take a multi-vitamin regularly, just to be sure I’m getting the nutrients I need. I try to get enough rest, but with a full time job and two little kids, sometimes I have trouble getting the rest I need. I’m even an almost compulsive hand washer, and still, I get sick.

So what do I do? I stay warm, I drink plenty of fluids. I especially like nice, warm cups of tea. Green tea, white tea, red tea, herbal teas with honey and lemon are soothing and I drink tea all day long. Our old family remedy for, well anything, was whiskey with honey and lemon, but I don’t find that to be a very good prescription on a work day. I’ll stick with my tea and hope that one of you has a comforting cold remedy for me to try.

Hi Joanne!!
such a timely topic! wonderful. Something I started a couple years ago was washing my sinus cavity with a saline rinse. I work in a dusty office so I keep a bottle in my desk to use a couple of times a day and have shown marked improvement.

here's a search from www.medlineplus.gov on nasal saline uses

http://vsearch.nlm.nih.gov/vivisimo/cgi-bin/query-meta?v%3Afile=viv_8LUA6q&server=search4.nlm.nih.gov&v%3astate=root%7cN511&id=N511&v%3aframe=list&action=list&sw=%7cSaline%20Nasal%7c&sec=1227010956&

not only do I breathe easier through the day but I have had fewer colds since I have started. While i am not a doctor, nor do i play one on TV, i can tell you that this stuff works. Whoodathunkit... salt water!

Mr. Low Tech, I'm with you. Saline irrigation helps my sinuses a lot, but I find it mostly helps with day to day dust, dry air or pollen. I'm totally devoted to my neti pot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neti_pot#Jala_Neti but it's no match for the runny nose I get with a cold. Still, like you I'm amazed by what a little salt water can do and I wouldn't want to be without it.

Agreed on the neti pot, tea, and echinacea for prevention, but the bottom line for treatment is hot soup. Start with the soup or broth of your choice -- chicken, miso, even bouillion -- and add lots of fresh ginger, fresh garlic, and hot pepper. (My personal favorite base is Lipton's noodle soup with an egg whisked in.) It will scare away all germs.

Soup is a great idea - I'm having miso soup for lunch!

a little as to why certain folk remedies really do work,
chicken broth contains the essential (meaning you body can't make it so you ahve to eat it) amino acid, lycine, which is an natural anti-viral. Ginger has antiinflamatory properties, Garlic has antibiotic (anti-bacterial) properties, and the steam from hot soup thins and loosen congestion. Hot peppers also cause the body to respond by thinning the mucous that causes congestion. BTW -- Cinnamon is good for those of us with diabetes becasue it naturally helps to regulate blood sugar, but don't use it instead of a medication prescribed by a real doctor.

there is science behind even homeopathic remedies.

To help prevent a cold or flu, instead of getting a flu shot I'd recommend Vitamin D. It's the sunshine vitamin for heaven sake. Who wouldn't recommend going into the sun for nature's healing?

Vitamin D3 to be exact.
