REDMOND AIR CENTER
Activated in 1964, the Redmond Air Center is a hub for Interagency wildland fire suppression, fire management, equipment support, and aviation activities for the Pacific Northwest Region (Oregon and Washington).
Located 2 miles east of Redmond, Oregon, at the Roberts Field/Redmond Municipal Airport, the Air Center is home to the Redmond Smokejumper Base, Airtanker Base, Interagency Hotshot Crew, Pacific Northwest Interagency Training Center, Interagency Fire Cache, Regional Aviation Group, and Administrative Services Group. During the summer months about 100 persons are employed with that number being augmented during fire emergencies.
Cooperation continually occurs with other wildland fire protection organizations such as the states of Oregon and Washington, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The Redmond Air Center serves as a centrally located "mobilization" center for the air transport of crews and other fire personnel. The Center has also worked with the military and National Guard for training and mobilization of troops.
Above is an aerial photo of the Redmond Air Center. At the top right is the Air Tanker Base with two large airtankers parked on the ramp. The large building in the center of the photo, just to the left of the tanker base ramp is the PNW Fire Cache. Slightly below and to the left of the fire cache is the Administration Building. At the upper left of the photo is the Smokejumper Ramp and Paraloft, there are two Shorts Sherpa jump planes on that ramp. The Pacific Northwest Training offices are also located in the Paraloft building. Below the Paraloft are the barracks, multi-purpose building and the main Juniper training room.
