Each of our California BLM field offices work to protect an important legacy of Native American cultural heritage, and the partnership between the BLM and California Tribes has always been strong. Recently, the California Indian Forest and Fire Management Council (CIFFMC) and BLM co-sponsored Certified Archaeological Surveyor (CAS) Training for twenty tribal members from six California Tribes.

 

From May 14 ^th to May 18 ^th , the training was undertaken to provide CIFFMC member Tribes basic field training to play a more active role in the survey and management of cultural resources on tribal and federal lands. The one week course also served as an educational setting for archaeologists interested in new ways of recording Traditional Cultural Properties (TCPs), traditional gathering areas and Native American sacred places. The California Office of Historic Preservation, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and California Department of Transportation participated and supported the training.

 

 

 Tribal representatives from the Hupa, Maidu, Pit River, Wintu, Round Valley, and Karuk Tribes attended a very successful training which concluded with cultural site tours by Dr. Eric Ritter of the Redding field office.
