Litchfield Corrals
The Litchfield Wild Horse and Burro facility is located along U. S. Highway 395, about 21 miles northeast of Susanville, California. The corrals are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visitors can stop to view horses and burros in several large holding pastures, or to learn more about adopting a mustang or burro. Adoptions are by appointments, which can be made by calling (530) 254-6575. The facility currently holds about 500 animals, primarily horses, gathered from herd management areas in northeast California and far northwest Nevada. These herd management areas, including Twin Peaks, High Rock Canyon and Devil's Garden, are known for producing good-sized horses, including animals well suited for endurance riding.

Ridgecrest Corrals
The Ridgecrest Regional Wild Horse & Burro facility is located four (4) miles east of Ridgecrest CA., on the Randsburg-Wash Road off California Highway 178. The facility business hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Adoptions are by appointment only, call (760) 384-5765 or 1-800-951-8720 for details. The facility is available for individual and group tours and has a nice little dirt perimeter road allowing the motorist a quality view of the animals.

OUTDOOR RECREATION SAFETY

Some day-trippers downplay real dangers, experts say. While attending a Palm Springs convention in May 2006, a 24-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man veered off a trail in the San Jacinto Mountains, turning an afternoon venture into a three-day nightmare. Clad in tennis shoes, without food or heavy clothing, the couple survived on provisions they found in someone else's backpack. The Santa Rosa/San Jacinto Mountains National Monument is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

"U.S. Wildfire Alert Goes To Highest Level" (CBS 13, Sacramento, 7/19/07)
International wildfire crews could be called to help fight blazes in the bone-dry West as U.S. officials boosted the nation's wildfire alert to its highest level. The West had been at level four for only a few weeks when officials decided to raise it to level five.

More than 15,000 marijuana plants were found and destroyed Friday by BLM and other law enforcement officials, outside Columbia. The five-foot plants, located on two sites a quarter mile from the road and were discovered by aerial observation.

"Pot seized near Yuba -Law enforcement busts 2nd marijuana plantation" (Grass Valley Union, 07/19/07)
Men in camouflage headed into the brush early Wednesday in a raid on a second marijuana plantation near the South Fork Yuba River. Pot was found growing in an area across the river from another plantation that police raided on Friday near the Independence Trail, Nevada County, property managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

Negotiations continue between Friends of Dos Palmas and the Bureau of Land Management regarding an old adobe building near the Dos Palmas oases.
