Aquatic Ecology - Inventory and Monitoring
The mission of the agency, as described in the Strategic Plan,
2004-2008, is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity
of the Nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present
and future generations. Data and information from the inventory
and monitoring program provide the requisite foundation to accomplish
this mission and to meet the Forest Service's business requirements.
Overall objectives of Inventory and Monitoring are to:
- Improve the knowledge base to enhance scientific understanding
of ecosystems, including human uses to support decision-making
of the nation's forests and grasslands;
- Fulfill agreements for inventory and monitoring results with
domestic and international partners;
- Provide continuous data, information, and analyses to decision
makers for adaptive management of national forests and grasslands;
and
- Provide the information necessary to assess the management
of Forest Service programs and support cost-effective program
delivery.
