Hispanic Division: Back to Whaling in Southeastern New England

Portuguese School in New Bedford

New Bedford's Portuguese community, which was predominantly Catholic, as were the populations in both the Azores and mainland Portugal, was large enough by the middle of the twentieth century to support three churches and two parochial schools. Here a nun teaches a geography lesson, as she points to Portugal on the globe. Several important place names written in both English and Portuguese are on the blackboard.
