Portuguese Town Fathers in ProvincetownThe civic leaders of Provincetown in the early 1940s, all of Portuguese descent, are gathered in council, in front of a mural depicting the signing of the Pilgrim compact in the bay of Provincetown, upon the first landing of the Pilgrims on American soil. Almost symbolically, the town fathers, representing the new wave of nineteenth- and twentieth-century immigration, work in the shadow of one of the town's most important historical events.
