Camping

Located within the reservoir lands at Ball Mountain Lake is the Winhall Brook Camping Area. Situated about seven miles north of Ball Mountain Lake off Route 100, the camping area (see map)offers a variety of recreational pursuits. The entire family will enjoy the trails, the play area for the children, the general camping area environment, and the interpretive programs given by Park Rangers. Park Rangers are available to help visitors and answer questions. During the winter, visitors can enjoy cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on almost 10 miles of trails.

Nothing's more enjoyable than camping during the summer. We even have Adirondack shelters on some of our campsites. Our camping sites can be reserved. Grills and tables are provided at the campsites with playground equipment, horseshoe pits, and restrooms nearby.

Whitewater Releases

Winter recreation on our trail system.

Ball Mountain Lake opens for recreational whitewater releases in April and September in conjunction with the seasonal drawdowns of the pool. The April release is typically a two-day event starting on a Saturday morning and ending on Sunday afternoon. The length of the September release is dictated by pool storage and current river flows.

The 8-mile run from the Ball Mountain Dam to the backwater of Townshend Lake has lass II-IV rapids with 1 to 2 foot drops. Private rafting companies along with paddling clubs from around New England and New York come to enjoy the 1500 CFS (cubic feet per second) release. Current river levels can be obtained from the USGS Gauging Station in Jamaica, and scheduled release dates can be obtained from the Reservoir Regulation Team.

Winhall Brook Camping Area is also open for these events.
