The New Technology |

During the 1990s, the National Weather Service modernized...with huge
technological advances. There are four advances of note (that will be
mentioned): how surface observations are taken (ASOS), how severe
storms are monitored (WSR-88D), how data is displayed during forecast
preparation (AWIPS), and how information reaches weather radio listeners
(CRS). It is hoped that these advances will improve forecast and
warning accuracy with the public receiving information in a more timely manner. In
the end, life and property will be better protected...the mission of the National Weather
Service.
