Selected Training Opportunities

The Office of Minority and Women's Health promotes a number of other training opportunities of special interest to racial and ethnic minority students, women, and young professionals. These include:

The American Indian Science and Engineering society (AISES) is a national nonprofit organization which nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional native values. The Internship Program provides opportunities for American Indians and Native Alaskans to pursue studies in science, engineering and technology areas.

The program provides a two-year fellowship for post-doctoral scientists to conduct research in infectious disease or public health microbiology at one of the CDC national laboratories.

Association for Prevention Teaching and Research is the national professional association of individuals and institutions dedicated to advancing individual and community health promotion and disease prevention in the education of physicians and other health professionals.

The Association of Minority Health Professions Schools (AMHPS) is a nonprofit educational, scientific and charitable organization. Through programs and funding it provides support for professional education, research and prevention programs to member institutions of the Association of Minority Health Professions School (AMHPS). Their primary mission is to engage the collective resources, scholarship and technology of member institutions to facilitate and promote optimum health among poor and minority people. AMHPS administers a number of training programs for underrepresented minorities including the James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program and Public Health Summer Fellowship Program for Minority Students (see entries in this listing).

The Association of Schools of Public Health is a national organization representing the deans, faculty and students of accredited member schools of public health and other programs seeking accreditation as schools of public health. The fellowship program was established to strengthen the relationship between the academic public health community and public health practice agencies.

Offering one and two year Fellowships designed to train and prepare scientists for careers in public health laboratories nationwide, this program is part of the Emerging Infectious Disease Program of the National Center for Preparedness, Detection, and Control of Infectious Diseases at CDC.

The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is a unique 2-year, post graduate program of service and on-the-job training for health professionals interested in the practice of epidemiology. EIS is the country’s critical epidemiology training service, combating the causes of major epidemics. Over the past 50 years, EIS officers have played pivotal roles in combating the root causes of major epidemics.

This program is one of the many programs the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities offer students to fulfill their mission, which is to increase college attendance and graduation rates for Hispanics.

The Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools (HSHPS) is a non-profit organization established in response to "Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans." The Association was established with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a part of the DHHS "Hispanic Agency for Action Initiative." The program provides Hispanics/Latinos with internship opportunities to explore potential public health careers.

The James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program provides opportunities for underrepresented racial and ethnic minority students to gain knowledge of the CDC 's activities and career opportunities. The program's long-term goal is to encourage students to consider careers in public health and infectious diseases.

The Public Health Prevention Service is a unique three year on-the-job training program designed to: provide training through service; develop leadership for local, state and national public health; build public health infrastructure; and promote health through prevention. It is part of the Office of Workforce and Career Development (OWCD) of CDC, and involves a year of work with two different assignments at the CDC in Atlanta. Subsequent years are at a state or local health department.

The Public Health Summer Fellowship for Minority Student addresses the shortage of minority professionals in public health. The purpose of the program is to expose students to the excitement, relevance and promise of public health at a time when the experience can influence their career choice and professional goals.

Project IMHOTEP is a program of Morehouse College designed for undergraduate students with some training in biostatistics, epidemiology, occupational safety and health or the health sciences. It provides participants with intensive research and data analysis experience with scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
