Colin Powell

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell was a soldier in the U.S. Army for 35 years, holding numerous command and staff positions. From October 1, 1989, to September 30, 1993, he served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the Department of Defense. This was his last assignment with the military. In 1997, Gen. Powell chaired the President’s Summit for America’s Future in Philadelphia, and now serves as the chairman of America’s Promise–the Alliance for Youth.
