To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, Susan Stein, curator at Monticello, organized an exhibit of the personal belongings of the owner. Nearly 300 objects, such as prints and drawings, furniture, decorative items, musical instruments, and personal objects, were assembled and displayed within Monticello as if the Jefferson family was in residence. The provenance of each item is extremely useful in tracing the history of Jefferson's belongings after the 1827 sale. This work, when coupled with the Eye of Thomas Jefferson, interprets Jefferson as both a collector and consumer and draws together the private, public, and political spheres of the 3rd President.
