In 1823 Nicholas Trist, at Jefferson's request, rewrote the catalog to the book collection that had been sold to reestablish the Library of Congress. This restored arrangement reflected Jefferson's intellectual classification of the works as well as their physical placement on the shelves at Monticello. In order that users may compare Jefferson's arrangement with that of the printed catalog authorized by Congress after it acquired the collection in 1815, this 1988 edition includes a reproduction of pages from two chapters (29 and 30) of 1815 printed catalog.
