Volunteer Spotlight Mrs. Bernardine Aguilar from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Aguilar is a tireless and dedicated volunteer who works on behalf of the Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly (CARIE) to teach beneficiaries in her community how to take an active role in understanding and protecting their health care. Last September, Mrs. Aguilar won an outstanding senior volunteer award from the Assistant Secretary for Aging for her willingness to take on a variety of roles and challenges. While participating in countless community education sessions, speaking on radio and television segments, and going out of her way to counsel homebound and other individuals in one-on-one sessions, Bernardine always has a warm smile and a kind word for the people she meets. She is known for her great compassion and concern for the well-being of others. Her hundreds of hours of volunteer activities have contributed greatly to improved community understanding of Medicare and Medicaid, helped to protect the integrity of the nation’s health care programs, and better ensured the quality of care provided to older and needy Americans. The Administration on Aging is very grateful to the thousands of outstanding volunteers, like Bernardine Aguilar, who are working in communities in every state and commonwealth to improve the quality of life for older Americans and their families. |
