World War II On the Home Front: Californians' Involvement in the War Effort

Teaching Activities

Activities (Standard 4.4.5)

  • Have students measure how much sugar or gasoline their families use in a week.  Compare this to the amount allocated each family during World War II.
  • Have students fill out the ration application, then design and create their own ration books.

Activities (Standards 11.7.5, 11.7.6)

  • Have students measure how much sugar and/or gasoline their families use in a week, compare or contrast this to the amount allocated each family during World War II, and write an expository essay explaining the difficulties of rationing.
  • Have students review the primary source documents shown here, then write an essay comparing or contrasting the home-front efforts during World War II with recent events such as September 11, 2001 or the war in Iraq
