Data about the use of bleach to clean injection equipment were collected from only four community pairs—injection drug users in Dallas and Denver and injection drug users and sex workers in Long Beach. Questions about bleach use were asked only of injectors who had shared injection equipment in the past 60 days.

The community-level analysis revealed that there was not a significant change in bleach use as a result of the ACDP intervention. Prior to the intervention, mean stage-of-change scores for bleach use indicated that most respondents in the intervention and comparison communities were in the preparation stage or a later stage. Over time, the mean stage-of-change scores did not change significantly in either condition.

Direct exposure to the ACDP intervention did have a significant effect on bleach use. In the intervention community, individuals who were exposed to the ACDP intervention had higher stage-of-change scores than those who were not exposed. This suggests that the ACDP influenced bleach use among people who read the role models stories and talked to a peer network volunteer.
