Work-RISQS lets you query for specific injury estimates (number of cases) or rates (number of cases per 100 full-time workers). Both queries work similarly. First, select a specific time period and any demographic or injury characteristics you wish to focus on. Then, Click the button. Results from your query will be displayed in a table that may be printed or downloaded.
How to.....
Open the pull-down list and Click on your choice. Multiple choices may be selected in parameter lists marked with (s) after the variable name and with the symbol (hold the Ctrl key down while clicking on individual items or hold the Shift key when clicking on the first and last item of a continuous list). Click the for examples.
NOTE: Queries with the default parameter of "ALL" selected for all variables will produce a national injury estimate or rate that is the grand total for all workers and injury types for the year. Selecting specific parameters will produce an estimate or rate for a narrower subset such as setting SEX = MALE to get the number of male workers injured or DIAGNOSIS = FRACTURE to get the number workers with fracture injuries. Specifically selecting SEX = MALE, DIAGNOSIS = FRACTURE, and EVENT = 1* FALLS will produce the number of male workers with fractures from falls.
TIP: Click on the variable name for more details about a specific parameter.
The BLS classification system for incident event, source, and secondary source has a hierarchical structure with division, major group, group, and subgroup categories expressed as 1, 2, 3, and 4 digit codes, respectively. Individual cases are coded to the maximum detail level possible in 2 to 4 digit categories. Division level (1 digit) categories are always the sum of all 2-4 digit subcategories. To facilitate analysis, aggregate categories that are the sum of all subcategories are indicated with 1 to 3 digits followed by an asterisk (e.g., Event = 1* Falls is the sum of all subcategories [2-4 digits codes] within the Falls division; Event = 11* Fall to lower level is the sum of all subcategories [3-4 digits codes] within the Fall to lower level major group).
NOTE: Because the coding structure is unbalanced, individual categories may not have a complete complement of subcategories to the 4 digit level. The user should have some familiarity with the coding structure prior to reporting the results from this system (see Tech Info).
TIP: Click and remember! The hash mark indicates that some or all codes have been selected along a tree branch. Only one branch within a division is visible at a time. Remember what you select and verify your selections in the results output table.
Use the Group Results By pull-down lists to produce a table of estimates for each subcategory within a parameter. Up to two categories may be selected by using the First and Second Category lists. The results table will have a row for each estimate by subcategory and a final row with the query total. If First and Secondary Categories are a selected, a subtotal row will also be given for the First Category items.
NOTE: The group by feature produces tables similar to the common CROSS-TAB output from many statistical programs. If SEX were selected as the first group by option, the results table would have estimates for males, females, and all workers (grand total). If, in addition, AGE GROUP were selected as the second group by option, the results table would have estimates for males by age group with a subtotal for males, similar estimates for females. If AGE GROUP were the first option selected and SEX the second option, the estimates would be the same as in the preceding table, but the order of estimates would be rearranged. A Second Category may be selected with no First Category selected.
TIP: If EVENT (tree), SOURCE (tree), or SECONDARY SOURCE (tree) is selected as the First Category, a specially formatted output table displays the code tree structure. If EVENT (list), SOURCE (list), or SECONDARY SOURCE (list) is selected as the Second Category, a simple list without the special formatting is output.
You may select one of three output options to change how the query results page looks. Under the Output Type pull-down list select:
Select the fourth output option:
NOTE: In the results table, the number and column format is fixed. Download the results file to your PC to change these formats.
TIP: Before down-loading the csv file, PRINT your results page!
To simplify the output table, the Display Non-reportable Results default setting (No) visually hides rows with non-reportable estimates in the results table. Click Yes in the pull-down list to display in the results table the titles and asterisks (*****) for the non-reportable categories. Categories with very few cases among the sample hospitals are always suppressed and never displayed regardless of the Display Non-reportable Results setting. Non-reportable/suppressed data are included in subtotals and the query total although estimates for the individual subcategories are not shown.
NOTE: In the results table, to maintain result reliability, answers are non-reportable when there are too few cases among the sample hospitals, the national estimate is too small, or the error about the estimate is too large (i.e., the coefficient of variation is >33%).
TIP: If Display Non-reportable Results = Yes, a group total may appear with asterisks, although no individual categories are shown, because of the way very small results are suppressed.
Click the button to submit your query. Queries typically take several seconds to more than a minute.
TIP: Queries with Event, Source, or Secondary Source chosen as Group Results By categories require the longest calculation times. Use Event (division) or Source (division) group by categories in a preliminary query.
The results table includes a list of your specific query parameters. At the bottom of the table are a series of data notes specific to your query because of the parameters chosen and general notes that apply to all queries.
Injury/illness estimates: the body of the table has group by subcategories (if this feature was used), the number of injuries and illnesses in thousands, the 95% confidence bounds expressed as a value in thousands to be added and subtracted from the national estimate to get the confidence interval, and the percentage of the grand total for the year.
Injury/illness rates: the body of the table has group by subcategories (if used), the number of injuries and illnesses in thousands, the number of full time equivalent (FTE) workers in thousands for the time period selected, the injury/illness rate in incidents per 100 FTE, and the 95% confidence bounds expressed as a plus/minus value in incidents per 100 FTE.
Select the Output Type = Printer Friendly HTML to minimize printing problems. However, all Work-RISQS output formats are printable using your browser print function. There are no frames used in this webpage.
TIP: Some tables may require your browser to be set to print in landscape mode (change your settings under the browser menu File-Page setup).
The Download Data option produces a comma-separated-value (.csv) formatted file for you to import into software such as a spreadsheet.
Internet Explorer Users: When you click the Download Results Table link choose "Save this file to disk" and click "OK". Then, choose a directory location, and click "Save".
If the extension assigned is ".htm", your version of Internet Explorer has a known bug that causes the HTML document to download rather than the CSV file. If so, right-click on the Download Results Table button and select "Save Target As" to download the CSV file or see Microsoft Support.
Netscape Users: If you are given four options "More Info, Pick App, Save File, or Cancel", choose "Save File" and in the next dialog box choose "Save file to disk".
Use the navigation bar at the left or bottom of the results page or use your browser's Back button.
TIP: If you use the Back button, your previous parameter selections may be retained (depending on your browser setup). Use the button at the bottom of the query page to reset all parameters to their default values. This also resets the Treatment Year to 1998.
Not all subcategories are displayed when using the Group Results By feature (e.g., selected Group by sex, but results only list males): You probably restricted all results by choosing an individual parameter such as Sex = Male then used Group by = Sex in the current or a previous query. Check all query parameters selected (the Group By feature does not override other selected parameters that restrict the query). Also, check the status of the suppress non-reportable categories option. A missing subcategory may not have reportable results.
Right side of result table doesn't print properly: Select the Printer Friendly HTML output type, try setting your browser to print in landscape mode (e.g., under File-Page setup), or download the results and print from a spreadsheet program.
National estimates for individual categories do not sum to the Grand Total (e.g., male + female Grand Total): the grand total includes cases with unknown characteristics (such as sex) that are not displayed in the results table (see the data notes).
National estimate from injury estimate page is not equal to the national estimate from the injury rate page: The injury estimate queries include all ages (unless user restricted), whereas injury rate queries include only workers 15 yrs. and older.
You received a "Timeout" or other error message instead of a results table: Try the query again now or at another time of day; or do not group by parameters with lots of subcategories such as Injury Source.
