Inputs: Emerging Issues

An emerging issue for NIOSH is the realization that often it is necessary to tailor best practices and practical solutions to meet the unique needs of small businesses. Solutions that have worked for large enterprises may be impractical for small businesses or require levels of technical expertise that are seldom available to small business owners. Guidance documents of the past may be too technical or may require investing too much time to sort out what actions are needed to prevent workplace injury or illness. Developing and implementing novel occupational safety and health (OSH) solutions and creating and disseminating useful guidance materials compatible with the small business model will be a challenge. This will only be accomplished through a comprehensive dialogue with small business partners and the associated trade groups, suppliers, and service providers who know this community well.
