NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluations (HHE)
A Health Hazard Evaluation is a study of a workplace. It is done to learn whether workers are exposed to hazardous materials or harmful conditions, and to provide recommendations for protecting these workers. In-depth information on the evaluations and recommendations are available in HHE reports.

Engineering Control Survey Reports
NIOSH conducts two types of Engineering Control Evaluation Surveys (Walk-through or preliminary or In-depth) as a part of research to reduce work related illnesses and injuries. The following Web site provides access to dozens of Engineering Control Evaluation reports.

NIOSH Alerts
NIOSH Alerts briefly present new information about occupational illnesses, injuries, and deaths. Alerts urgently request assistance in preventing, solving, and controlling newly identified occupational hazards. The follow website provides access to dozens of NIOSH Alerts.
Criteria Documents, Occupational Hazard Assessments, Special Hazard Reviews and Joint Occupational Health Documents
Criteria documents are developed to provide the basis for comprehensive occupational safety and health standards. These documents generally contain a critical review of the scientific and technical information available on the prevalence of hazards, the existence of safety and health risks, and the adequacy of methods to identify and control hazards. Recommendations for minimizing safety and health risks include medical monitoring, exposure assessment, worker training, control technology, personal protective equipment, and recordkeeping, as well as RELs where appropriate.
Special Hazard Reviews (SHRs) and Occupational Hazard Assessments (OHAs) are written to complement NIOSH recommendations for standards. These documents assess safety and health problems and recommend appropriate methods for control and monitoring.
Joint Occupational Health Documents (JOHDs) are developed with foreign government agencies. Memoranda of Understanding for such joint publications have been signed between NIOSH and the Swedish National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH) as well as between NIOSH and the Nordic Expert Group for Documentation of Occupational Exposure Limits (NEG). One product of these agreements is the development of JOHDs in order to provide the scientific basis for establishing recommended occupational exposure limits.

This criteria document reviews available information about the adverse health effects associated with occupational exposure to metalworking fluids (MWF's) and aerosols.
- Occupational Noise Exposure
DHHS (NIOSH) Publication No. 98-126
This document also provides recommendations for the management of hearing loss prevention programs (HLPPs) for workers whose noise exposures equal or exceed 85 dBA. The recommendations include program evaluation, which was not articulated in the 1972 criteria document and is not included in the OSHA and MSHA standards.
- Rubber Products Manufacturing Industry
DHHS (NIOSH) Publication No. 93-106
Excess deaths from bladder, stomach, lung, hematopoietic, and other cancers have occurred among workers involved in the manufacture of rubber products. These workers may also risk adverse respiratory effects, dermatologic effects, reproductive effects, injuries, and repetitive trauma disorders. The adverse health effects cannot be attributed to a single chemical or group of chemicals because workplace exposures vary greatly and chemical formulations change frequently. Epidemiologic, toxicologic, and industrial hygiene studies are needed to assess the risk of cancer and other adverse health effects for rubber products workers.
- Identifying High-Risk Small Business Industries-The Basis for Preventing Occupational Injury, Illness, and Fatality (SHR)

NIOSH has prepared this report to characterize the risk of occupational injury, illness, and fatality in industries composed mostly of small business establishments. Identifying these risks will provide essential information to practitioners in occupational safety and health, the small business community (owners, managers, and employees), labor officials, trade associations, insurers, product suppliers, local and State agencies, and others involved with small business.
