Activites: NIOSH Funded Research Grants

NIOSH sponsors research and training through its extramural programs, which complement the Institute's intramural programs. More information is available form the NIOSH Office of Extramural Programs.

Hearing Hazard Associated with Industrial Noise Exposure

The purpose of this project is to develop and test the validity of an alternate approach to noise analysis for the purpose of hearing conservation which will more precisely predict the audiometric and morphological consequences of an exposure by studying new metrics of industrial noise exposure hypothesized to be better predictors of noise-induced permanent threshold shift.

Understanding Vibration Injury

Our long-term goal is to understand the mechanism of vibration injury at the cellular and molecular levels in order to define strategies for monitoring and preventing hand arm vibration syndrome. These studies help to improve the health, safety and welfare of workers exposed to hazardous vibration.

Effectiveness of a Machine Guarding Intervention

The purpose of this project is to develop, implement and evaluate a peer education intervention to reduce hazards of metal working machinery.

Dermal Absorption of Chemicals from Liquid Mixtures

The ultimate goal of this research effort is to provide occupational safety and health practitioners with improved guidance regarding potentially dangerous levels of occupational dermal exposure

Exposure to Bisphenol A and Its Reproductive Effect in Humans

Specific aims of this project are as follows: (1) Among women (both exposed workers and spouses of male exposed workers), is there a relationship of exposure with sex hormone profile, menstrual disorders, frequency of sexual intercourse, time-to pregnancy, and spontaneous abortion? (2) Among men (both exposed workers and spouses of female exposed workers), is there a relationship of exposure with sex hormone profile, inhibin B levels, semen quality, and frequency of sexual intercourse? (3) Among the children of exposed workers, is there a relationship of parental exposure with sex ratio, birth weight, age at development of secondary sex features, menstrual characteristics, and sex hormone profile? The proposed study will evaluate the reproductive effects of BPA in settings where there have been high levels of exposure. The study will also investigate effects in multiple human generations.

Biomechanics & Physiology of Cumulative Low Back Disorders

The purpose of this project is to further the understanding of the physiology of low back disorders by exploring the biomechanical and neurophysiological responses to a series of static and cyclic loads simulating a wide range of load-recovery schemes.

Risk Factors and Controls for Falls from Heights

Three projects are proposed that will use laboratory experiments and biomechanical modeling to investigate and mitigate the effects of localized muscle fatigue on balance control. First, experiments will be conducted to examine and quantify the effects of localized muscle fatigue on balance control and the ability to recover from a balance perturbation. Second, a biomechanical model will be developed to quantify balance control strategies in terms of joint torques and to predict the effects of localized fatigue on these parameters. Third, the effectiveness of two interventions aimed at reducing the adverse effects of fatigue on balance control will be determined.

Collaborative Study of Workplace Musculsoskeletal Disorders

The purpose of this project is to determine the dose-response relationships between exposure to biomechanicsl factors and the development of hand, wrist, and elbow musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

Prevention of Solvent and Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

This proposal focuses on the systematic study of the ototoxic effects of styrene and toluene, how these solvents interact with noise and whether the effects of solvents or noise can be prevented with antioxidant therapy. These studies will increase knowledge on the ototoxicity of styrene and toluene; clarify how the two solvents interact with noise; clarify if oxidative stress is a factor in solvent ototoxicity; determine if ototoxic effects of solvents can be prevented with antioxidants.

Textile Industry Exposures and Breast Cancer in Women

The purpose of this project is to test the hypothesis that Electromagnetic Fields and rotating shift work are risk factors for breast cancer among women textile workers in Shanghai .
