Tongass Land Management Plan

In 2008, the Tongass National Forest completed a comprehensive review of the Tongass Land and Resource Management Plan. Also known as TLMP, the Plan and its accompanying Record of Decision, Environmental Impact Statement, Maps, and Appendices are available in a paper version, on CD-ROM, and here on the internet. District maps, and any subsequent plan amendments, are also available on line.

The journey from the original 1979 Tongass National Forest Plan to the current one has been long and complex. A summary of the key points along the way is to be found in the Record of Decision (ROD) for the 2008 Forest Plan, and a more complete discussion is included in Volume I of Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Plan. The most current revision process was begun in 2006. Objectives for the review were to address any deficiencies in the previous plan and to incorporate new information, to balance competing demands for forest resources, and to ensure that the Tongass National Forest would be managed in a sustainable manner. Because this most recent assessment completes the mandatory periodic review prescribed by the National Forest Management Act (NFMA), the updated plan will not need further review for 10 to 15 years, unless changes in conditions warrant it.

A highlight of the 2008 Plan is an historic partnership between the State of Alaska and the U.S. Forest Service. Both entities agree to work cooperatively toward a shared vision for meeting the needs of Southeast Alaska, while protecting the special and wild places of one of the world’s most important intact ecosystems.

District-scale maps show the same information as the Forest Plan map but also include VCU (watershed) boundaries, streams, existing roads, and existing timber harvested areas. Note that some of the maps are very large and, depending on your connection speed to the Internet, could take quite some time to download.
