General

Profile of Older Persons:
Useful brochure with the latest key statistics on older Americans in 16 key subject areas including population figures, living arrangements, education, income and poverty, health, and disabilities. It includes both narrative and statistical charts and tables.

Older Americans 2008: Key Indicators of Well-Being (Off Site)
This report of the Federal Forum on Aging-Related Statistics covers 38 key indicators carefully selected by the Forum to portray aspects of the lives of older Americans and their families. The report is divided into five subject areas: population, economics, health status, health risks and behaviors, and health care.  See also: Facts and Figures: Statistics on Minority Aging in the U.S. adapted by AoA from the Indicator data.

National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (Off Site)
Includes both NACDA publications and information about datasets which cover many areas of aging. NACDA has also started making selected public datasets (Off Site) available online for downloading including the National Senior Citizens Survey and others.

AGing Integrated Database (AGID)
The AGID is an AoA on-line query system that provides dynamic access to AoA-related program performance results, surveys, and other data files.  These include Census population estimates; tabulations from the Census American Community Survey data on population aging, sex, race and ethnicity, income, poverty, disability, living arrangements and marital status, grandparent responsibility, and more; as well as AoA surveys of its program participants.   The system allows users to produce customized tables at the national and state level.

Fedstats (Off Site)
More than 100 agencies in the Federal Government produce statistics of interest to the public. The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this site to provide easy access to the full range of statistics and information produced by these agencies for public use.

General Access Tools: (Off Site)
The Census Bureau web site includes a variety of Access Tools to help users extract tables.  Of special interest is the new American Factfinder system which lets users construct their own tables online from various Census data sources including the 1990 Census - 2000 Census data is being added during 2001 - 2003.  Other Access Tools include:  U.S. Gazetteer (http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer - gets data by place name or zip code), a data extraction tool: Ferret http://dataferrett.census.gov/TheDataWeb/index.html (CPS only). Census also includes Search mechanisms to search for a word place, or map.

Statistical Abstract of the United States  
Online version of this popular, annually updated,  authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the US. Aging into the 21st Century
AoA funded special report developed in 1996 by noted demographer Jacob Siegel providing the projections on the future elderly population. Includes population, marital status, and ousehold information as well as information about labor force participation, income, education, living arrangements, and life expectancy.

Statistical Tables on 1990 Population and Housing Patterns Among Older Americans
Sixteen (16) statistical tables on the 1990 Population and Housing Patterns Among Older Americans. These tables are based on the data from Special Tabulation on Aging using 1990 Census data. They cover such areas as mobility and self-care limitations, ousing characteristics, educational, marital, living arrangements, poverty and income status, as well as income distribution of the elderly. They are available both in html and pdf format (instructions and a link to the free pdf reader software are provided).

NIA Centers on the Demography of Aging
Home page for links to the nine centers on the Demography of Aging sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) which conduct research on health, social factors, economics, and other issues that affect the U.S. older population. Aging Activities of the National Center for Health Statistics
The National Center for Health Statistics ( NCHS) web site includes this section on aging related publications, data, and off-site links. Of particular interest are:

  • Health, United States
    NCHS annual report on the health status of the nation; contains considerable data on the aging. (Off Site)
  • Trends in Health and Aging
    A  Web-based data archive designed to show trends in health-related behaviors, health status, health care utilization, and health care costs of the older population.  The warehouse contains information from a variety of national and state level data systems, the majority maintained by NCHS. The Warehouse is a dynamic system; series based on regular collection systems are updated as soon as new figures become available. Moreover, the number of topics grows as important new data are made available. The user can create custom data tables. (Off Site) 
  • Longitudinal Studies of Aging
    A family of surveys designed to measure changes in health status, health-related behaviors, health care utilization, and the causes and consequences of these changes within and across two cohorts of elderly Americans. (Off Site)

Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD)
These nationally representative longitudinal data collections begun in the early 1990s examine retirement and the aging of society. Included are information about these studies, papers and publication, and data files for downloading. (Off Site)

Social Security Administration Statistical Information

Bureau of Labor Statistics Data
BLS has extensive data on employment and income of the entire population with many tables providing breakdowns by age. Of particular interest are the data on Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey which includes some tables with data on the older worker. (Off Site)

International Programs Center - Studies and Reports
The IPC, part of the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, conducts demographic and socioeconomic studies covering areas outside the 50 State (and DC) including other countries, insular areas and US Territories. Several of the IPC studies focus on aging from an international perspective. (Off Site)

Census Bureau Statistics on Educational Attainment
Data on educational attainment, including data by age, based on the annual Current Population Survey. (Off Site)

HUD User Data Sets
Original electronic data sets generated by HUD sponsored data collection efforts, including the American Housing Survey, HUD median family income limits, as well as microdata from research initiatives on topics such as housing discrimination, the HUD-insured multifamily housing stock, and the public housing population. (Off Site)

American Housing Survey
The national American Housing Survey, conducted every 2 years by the Bureau of Census for HUD, provides detailed data on housing costs, home financing, household equipment, housing and neighborhood conditions, and the households that occupy them. (Off Site)
