Introduction

This knowledge path has been compiled by the Maternal and Child Health Library at Georgetown University. It points to current, high-quality Spanish-language health resources for health professionals and consumers. The first section presents general resources that cover a wide range of health topics, while the second section lists resources that focus on specific aspects of maternal and child health. This knowledge path will be updated periodically.

The databases listed below are excellent tools for identifying additional Spanish-language health resources. Many of the entries below contain tips on how to use the databases efficiently. Please note that databases vary in how terms should be entered; for example, some require quotation marks and others don't. Enter search phrases as shown in bold below.

  • Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. Call for help with reporting child abuse and neglect or to speak with a counselor. The hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with professional crisis counselors who, through interpreters, can provide assistance in 170 languages, including Spanish. The hotline offers crisis intervention, information, literature, and referrals to thousands of emergency, social service, and support resources. All calls are anonymous and confidential. Telephone: (800) 422-4453 (4-A-CHILD).

  • Child Welfare Information Gateway: Resources in Spanish. Presents Spanish-language resources on child abuse and neglect prevention and intervention, child protective services, foster care, and adoption. Search the gateway library for additional Spanish-language child welfare resources by entering spanish in the keyword field. Narrow your search by adding keywords or a publication year. Click on Go to get your results. The gateway is a service of the Department of Health and Human Service (DHHS).

  • AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access). Contains bibliographic information for agricultural literature including many child and adolescent nutrition publications from USDA's Food and Nutrition Service; state child nutrition agencies; Nutrition Education and Training Program products; Team Nutrition grantees; cooperative extension program materials; and materials from associations, universities, and the private sector. AGRICOLA is organized into two data sets (books and articles). To identify Spanish-language materials, click on Keyword Search under Books or Articles. First select Set Limits in the bottom right corner of the search box. Select Language: Spanish; select a date range; and click on Set Limits. Next, enter your topic of interest (e.g., nutrition). Use the thesaurus to identify search terms. AGRICOLA is a service of the National Agricultural Library (NAL).

  • Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) Databases. Presents a collection of databases about evaluated food and nutrition education and training materials and research reports for nutrition educators and other health professionals, school food service and child nutrition personnel, and consumers. FNIC is located at the National Agricultural Library. Databases with Spanish-language materials are

    Healthy Meals Resource System Education and Training Materials Database. Presents information about educational materials for school personnel and others working in child nutrition programs. To identify Spanish-language materials, browse Search by Keyword and click on Spanish Language Materials.

    SNAP-Ed Connection Resource Finder Database. Presents information about training and continuing education resources for nutrition educators working with audiences with low incomes. To find Spanish-language materials, click on Advanced Search. Enter a search term (e.g., breastfeeding), scroll to Select a language, select Spanish, and click on Search to get your results.

    WIC Works Education and Training Materials Database. Contains information about books, brochures, training kits, videotapes, posters, and other resources that can be used in staff training or participant education for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). To find Spanish-language materials, select Language: Spanish; select a topic, format, or user group; and select Search to get your results.

  • La Leche League International /La Liga de la Leche (LLLI). Offers breastfeeding-education materials in Spanish and an online Spanish-speaking breastfeeding-support group. LLLI aims to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, education, information, and encouragement.

  • MyPyramid Food Guidance System. Presents a nutrition-education tool in English and Spanish that translates nutritional recommendations into the kinds and amounts of food to eat each day based on a person's age, gender, and activity level. MyPyramid is a resource of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

  • Nutrition.gov en Español. Links to Spanish-language food and nutrition information from federal agencies. Topics include dietary guidelines and weight management, meal planning, and federal nutrition-assistance programs.

  • Office of Women's Health (OWH). 2006. An easy guide to breastfeeding/Una guía fácil para la lactancia. Washington, DC: Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). This booklet is written in English and Spanish. It is geared toward new or expectant mothers and provides breastfeeding information and encouragement.

Oral Health

  • National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) Library. Presents a collection of materials to assist health professionals, program administrators, educators, policymakers, and others in improving oral health services for pregnant women, infants, children, and adolescents. Includes oral health materials for consumers. To identify Spanish-language oral health materials, scroll to the Non-English Language Materials section and click on Spanish. OHRC is supported by MCHB, and it collaborates with the Maternal and Child Health Library on its oral-health-collection development.
