Why Have a Florida Pilot Program?
Everyone along the Atlantic coast knows that hurricanes endanger lives
and damage property. What fewer people know is that over half the U.S.
population lives in coastal zones, and the populations in these areas
continue to grow. The Coastal Storms Program seeks to ensure the safety
of coastal residents and sustain the natural environment, which in turn
will promote a healthy economy. This will be accomplished by developing
products and services that will help local communities predict and reduce
the impacts of coastal storms.
How Has the Coastal Storms Program Worked?
This Program's first pilot effort is finishing up in the St. Johns
Watershed, Florida. This effort is a compilation of nine projects that
address specific hazards-related issues. Taken together, the projects
will result in a large suite of new and improved tools, data, information,
forecast models, and training for the coastal communities in the pilot
study area.

Pilot projects in Florida were selected according to the needs of the
community and the corresponding capabilities of NOAA to meet those needs.
These projects promote navigation safety, improve weather observations
and predictions, and help the community prepare for the seen and unseen
hazards associated with hurricanes and other tropical storms. For more
