Once HIV has infected a cell and made copies of itself, it uses an enzyme called protease to process itself correctly so it can be released from the cell to infect other cells. Protease inhibitors work by blocking that enzyme.

Notes on taking this medication
Always take with food, to increase absorption
Reyataz interacts with many other drugs; persons using Reyataz with those drugs may need an adjustment to their dose of Reyataz or the other drugs; consult your medical provider
Reyataz interacts with medicines for indigestion, heartburn, and ulcers, including medicines available over the counter; check with your medical provider before using these medicines
Side effects
Jaundice (yellow eyes and/or yellow skin), especially when used with Norvir; this is rarely serious, but let your medical provider know if this develops
Abdominal pain; liver inflammation and increased liver enzyme levels
Uncommon: elevations in cholesterol and triglycerides
