CONTENT: The text for
this feature was written by Ann Hoenigswald, Painting Conservator, National Gallery of Art.
It originally appeared in the booklet Manet's The Dead Toreador and The Bullfight:
Fragments of a Lost Salon Painting Reunited, published by The Frick Collection.
Additional material by Susan Grace Galassi, Associate Curator, Frick Collection, and independent scholars
Malcolm Park and Juliet Wilson-Bareau is from the same source.
RESEARCH: The examination of
these works was performed with the collaboration of Lucy Bisognano and Elizabeth Walmsley
at the National Gallery of Art, who also participated in extensive discussions regarding the complicated
development and the history of the painting. In addition, Malcolm Park provided proposals to interpret the various stages
of the painting and its examination. Juliet Wilson-Bareau was the catalyst who initially
encouraged the project and brought conservators and art historians together.
