X-radiographs and a careful examination of the paint surface with both the microscope and the naked eye provided conservators with information about the development and history of the painting. Art historians provided the context for the works and, together with conservators, established the relationship between the two paintings. The use of computer enhancement and superimposition and manipulation of these hidden layers allows scholars to suggest how the painting appeared in its uncut form.
