December 7, 2007: Storm Damage and Road Closure for
Siuslaw National Forest
This week’s storm wreaked havoc throughout the Oregon Coast Range,
including sections of the Siuslaw National Forest.
November 30, 2007: Marys Peak Road Closed Due
to Snow and Ice
More snow and extremely icy conditions on the road to the top of Marys
Peak prompted Forest officials to close the gate at Conner’s
Camp citing concerns for public safety.
November 27, 2007: Oregon Pacific Coast Passport
Holiday Discount
Oregon Pacific Coast Passports will again be on sale at a $5 discount beginning
Dec. 1.
November 21, 2007: Marys Peak Road Closure
Snow arrived on Marys Peak over the weekend prompting Siuslaw National
Forest officials to close the newly installed gate located at milepost
eight on the Marys Peak road.
November 15, 2007: Christmas Tree Permits For
Sale
The Siuslaw National Forest will begin selling Christmas tree permits
November 19. Permits cost $5.00 each, which allows the permit holder
to cut one tree for personal use.
November 13, 2007: Cape Perpetua Open For The
Winter
The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
throughout the winter. Forest Service staff and volunteers will be available
to assist visitors, and nature films will be shown on request.
October 31, 2007: Office Transition Progressing ~ Florence Office Temporarily
Closed
The Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
office transition is progressing, with full implementation expected by
the end of November. Work at various office locations is being completed
to adjust to the new organization and to modernize older facilities.
October 11, 2007: Expect Delays on Area Roads
A restoration project using a heavy-lift helicopter to place large trees
in mid-coast streams to provide spawning and rearing habitats for coho
salmon, chinook salmon, cutthroat trout and steelhead is expected to
cause minor traffic delays on some area roads beginning mid-October.
October 10, 2007: Renovations to Waldport Office May Result in Periodic
Office Closures
Work on the Waldport office of the Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon
Dunes National Recreation Area may result in temporary changes in office
hours, perhaps even closures as work to renovate the office building
progresses.
October 8, 2007: Cape Perpetua Mushroom Hikes
Come meet Cape Perpetua’s fungal menagerie Oct. 20-21 during the
Yachats Mushroom Festival. Regional mushroom experts will lead introductory
and advanced hikes from the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center three miles
south of Yachats.
September 19, 2007: Blue-Green Algae Found in Siltcoos
Lake ~ Siuslaw National Forest Recreation Site Remains Open
High blue-green algae levels found in Siltcoos Lake caused Siuslaw National
Forest officials to post a health advisory for the primitive camping site
located next to the lake.
September 14, 2007: Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee
Meets for Secure Rural Schools Funding
Members
of the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) will meet September
21 in Corvallis to recommend close to $1 million worth of projects designed
to improve natural resources on federal lands in Benton, Coos, Douglas,
Lane, Lincoln and Tillamook counties.
September 12, 2007: Cape Perpetua Visitor Center Moves To Off-Season
Hours
The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be open daily from 10 a.m.-4
p.m. beginning Monday, Sept. 17. Interpretive programs, nature films
or guided
hikes are offered every hour on the hour.
September 10, 2007: Temporary Road Closure on Forest Road 24
A portion of Forest Road 24, located southeast of Florence, will be temporarily
closed for paving and culvert replacement beginning Monday, September
10.
September 7, 2007: Heritage Tree Dedication and
Siuslaw National Forest Centennial Celebration
The Giant Spruce tree located at Cape Perpetua will finally get its due.
Nominated as part of the Class of 2006 through the Oregon Heritage Tree
Program, the 600-year-old tree that began life as a tiny Sitka spruce nourished
by a nurse log still stands today as a historical landmark.
August 6, 2007: Tidepool Discovery Days August
11-12: Sunflower Power
There is plenty to see and do at the tidepools at Cape Perpetua. However,
late-summer tidepooling offers a special treat: sunflower stars.
July 20, 2007: Barnie Gyant Named as Siuslaw
National Forest Supervisor
Barnie Gyant (pronounced gant) has been selected as the new Supervisor
of the Siuslaw National Forest in Corvallis, OR, Forest Service officials
announced today.
July 20, 2007: Public Use Restrictions Lifted
Due to the rain that has fallen over the past several days the Siuslaw
National Forest has lifted the public use restrictions on the Forest.
July 10, 2007: Siuslaw
National Forest Enacts Fire Restrictions
Due to increasing temperatures along the Oregon Coast and throughout
the West, the Siuslaw National Forest will be implementing special fire
regulations beginning Tuesday, July 10, 2007.

July 2, 2007: Remember, Fireworks Prohibited on National Forest Lands
As the busy Fourth of July holiday approaches, the Siuslaw National
Forest would like to remind everyone that fireworks of any kind are prohibited
on National Forest lands.
June 28, 2007: There is Still Time to Provide Input Into The Siuslaw
NF Travel Management Planning Effort
It’s not too late for the public to provide input to the Siuslaw
National Forest’s Travel Management planning effort. The first
phase of public involvement continues through July 31, 2007.
June 19, 2007: Project Deadline for
Natural Resource Projects
Due to a one year extension of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination
Act, local citizens again have an opportunity to submit applications for
funds designed to improve Siuslaw National Forest lands and the rural economies
of local counties.
June 19, 2007: Siuslaw National Forest Looking to Manage Non-native
Plants
The Siuslaw National Forest is proposing to manage invasive non-native
plant infestations on approximately 567 acres with chemical (herbicide),
manual (pulling, grubbing), and mechanical (mowing, brushing, cutting)
treatment methods.

The Central Coast Ranger District – Oregon Dunes National Recreation
Area of the Siuslaw National Forest will be offering one hundred (100)
six-month Commercial Matsutake Mushroom permits on Wednesday, July
25, 2007.
June 11, 2007: Tidepool Discovery Days at
Cape Perpetua
Enjoy some of month's lowest tides at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area.
Cape Perpetua staff and volunteers will again host its annual Tidepool
Discovery Days on Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17, at the Cape Perpetua
tidepools.
June 6, 2007: Eel Creek Campground Now Open
Eel Creek Campground on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area will
reopen on Thursday, June 7. The campground had been closed after a culvert
at the campground entrance failed this winter.

Free Fishing Events
As part of the nineteenth annual observance of National Fishing Week,
the Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area,
Oregon State Parks and Recreation, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife,
other agencies and private groups, invite you to come out for a fun day
of free fishing on Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10.

Planned maintenance and repair on the Hauser Road sand access and associated
road on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is scheduled to begin
Wednesday, June 6.

Saturday, June 2, 2007 marks the 15th annual National Trails Day. People
can join the celebration by enjoying a hike at a favorite trail or by
participating in a planned volunteer activity like a trail work project
or dedication.
May 29, 2007: Temporary Bridge to be Placed
at Eel Creek Campground Entrance
A 78-foot portable steel bridge is scheduled to be placed at the entrance
to the Eel Creek Campground on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area,
Thursday, May 31.
May 21, 2007: Restrictions in Place to Protect Snowy Plovers
Visitors to the Oregon coast over the Memorial Day holiday are reminded
of the seasonal restrictions currently in place at a number of locations
between Florence and North Bend.

The Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
is purposing to initiate abandonment or destruction procedures for surplus
government property located north of Yachats, Oregon.

of Motorized Use Areas
A two-year process to decide where motorized use will be allowed in
the Siuslaw National Forest will begin with public input at all forest
offices beginning May 2007.

Welcomes New District Ranger
Pam Gardner, the new District Ranger for the Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon
Dune National Recreation Area on the Siuslaw National Forest, begins
her new job on May 29.
April 27, 2007: Marys Peak Now Open
The road to the top of Marys Peak is now open to the public. Crews worked
over the past two weeks to clear rocks and other debris from the roadway
and ditches, and to install protective barriers along a large slide that
damaged the road, creating concerns for public safety.
April 23, 2007: New OHV Staging Facility at the Oregon Dunes
A new off-highway vehicle (OHV) staging area is being added to the Oregon
Dunes National Recreation Area and Siuslaw National Forest recreation
fee system.

April 12, 2007: Forest Road 32 Maintenance
Scheduled
A project to reconstruct portions of Forest Service Road 32 will begin
on April 23.
April 11, 2007: Winema Hotshots Training on
the Dunes
Each spring the Winema Interagency Hotshot Crew travels from their home
base in Klamath Falls, Oregon to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation
Area to get in some spring training in preparation for the coming fire
season.
April 6, 2007: Galloway Road Temporary Closure at Sand Lake Recreation
Area
Road construction and paving is planned for Galloway Road, the main access
road to Sand Lake Recreation Area, located 15 miles southwest of Tillamook,
on the Hebo Ranger District of the Siuslaw National Forest. Construction
and paving will begin April 9 and may continue through May 29.
April 4, 2007: Changes to Hauser Day-Use Announced
The Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation has
announced a change in how the day-use area on Hauser Depot Road will
be managed.
April 2, 2007: Student Group and Volunteers Honored For Restoration
Work
In recognition for their valuable service in helping to restore and
enhance aquatic habitat in the Siuslaw River Basin, the Siuslaw Middle
School Stream Team, along with volunteers Tom Petersen and Cliff Walker
were honored by the Forest Service in a presentation this winter.
March 27, 2007: Marys Peak Road To Remain Closed-For
Now
The lingering effects of winter will cause a delay in opening the road
to the top of Mary’s Peak this spring.
March 20, 2007: Cape Perpetua Visitor Center Open for Whale Watching
The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
March 24-31 for Whale Watch Week.
March 13, 2007: Snowy Plover Nesting Season
Begins March 15
The nesting season for the western snowy plover begins on area beaches
March 15 and runs through September 15.
March 12, 2007: Public Comments Sought on Watershed Restoration Project
The Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area
District Ranger is proposing the West Alsea Landscape Management Project,
a watershed restoration project in the western portion of the lower Alsea
River watershed.
February 13, 2007: Public Invited to Observe Forest
Service Planning Process
The public is invited to observe the Loon (Erhart) Lake Aquatic Weed Control
Project planning meeting scheduled for Friday, February 23, 2007 from 10:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
February 9, 2007: Cape Perpetua Trails Reopened
The trails within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area are again open and ready
for the public. Several impassable blockages had resulted from severe
storms earlier this winter.
January 29, 2007: Pubic Comment Needed for Restoring
Watersheds in Salmon River
The public is currently being asked to comment on three separate watershed
restoration projects being proposed by the Hebo Ranger District in and
around the Salmon River Estuary.

Leads Changes
District Ranger Bill Helphinstine completed a distinguished career with
the US Forest Service with his retirement this January.
Jannuary 12, 2007: Hebo Ranger District Resumes Sale of Firewood Permits
The Hebo Ranger District is once again issuing personal firewood cutting
permits. Permits are sold Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
at the office in Hebo.
