December 22, 2003: Siuslaw National Forest Offices Closed For The Holidays
The offices of the Siuslaw National Forest will be closed for the Christmas holiday on Thursday December 25 and Friday December 26. This includes the Supervisor’s Office in Corvallis, as well as the Hebo, Waldport, and Mapleton Ranger District offices, and the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center in Reedsport. The offices will be open during regular business hours on Monday, December 29.

December 22, 2003: Oregon Dunes NRA Announces Changes To Parking At Umpqua Beach
Beginning January 1, 2004, Umpqua Beach #2 Parking and Staging area on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area will be managed as a day use only area, closed between 10:00PM and 6:00AM. The parking lot has been designated as a day-use area to alleviate problems associated with overnight camping in an area not designed as a campground.

December 1, 2003: Oregon Pacific Coast Passport Holiday Discount
Oregon Pacific Coast Passports will again be on sale at a $5 discount during the month of December. As in past years, the $35 annual passport will be sold for $30 from December 1 through December 31, 2003 according to Mike Harvey, Siuslaw National Forest Assistant Recreation Staff Officer.

November 20, 2003: Marys Peak Road Closes For The Season
On November 21 the road to the top of Marys Peak will be closed to motor vehicles, at the gate just above Conners Camp at milepost 5 ½. The closure will remain in effect until April 1, or until the road is clear of snow. In additionto the closure, the road below the gate will not be plowed during the winter. Forest Road 30 through to the town of Harlan will remain open year round.

October 15, 2003: Comments Sought For Sand Camping Changes On Oregon Dunes
Under the guidance of the Oregon Dunes Management Plan, the Siuslaw National Forest is proposing to implement the OHV-Sand Camping Project to designate dispersed camping sites in the off-highway vehicle areas of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (ODNRA).

October 7, 2003: Siuslaw National Forest Now Issuing Firewood Permits
The Siuslaw National Forest is issuing firewood-cutting permits. Firewood may be harvested from any designated area located on the Waldport Ranger District. A map of the cutting area(s) will be provided with the permit.

October 3, 2003: Volunteer To Cleanup The Beach
The Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup will take place on Saturday October 11, 2003. This is an annual event sponsored by SOLV, Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism, designed to help cleanup Oregon beaches.

September 19, 2003: Siuslaw Watershed Basin One of Four Finalists for International Riverprize Awards
Members of a partnership that make up Siuslaw River Basin Restoration projects returned from Brisbane, Australia recently as proud finalists in an international river restoration award.

September 17, 2003: Visit for Free on National Public Lands Day
In recognition of National Public Lands Day on September 20, fees will be waived for the day at all Northwest Forest Pass sites on the Siuslaw National Forest, which includes the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Sand Lake Recreation Area and Cape Perpetua Scenic Area.

September 10, 2003: Public Use Restrictions Lifted
Due to the recent wet weather, the Siuslaw National Forest went to a moderate fire danger level today. Along with that change in fire danger, Forest officials have lifted the public use restrictions on the Forest.

August 29, 2003: Fire Precaution Raised to Level III
With the upcoming warming trend the Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) on the Siuslaw National Forest will be back to a level III.

August 13, 2003: Fire Precaution Lowered on Siuslaw National Forest
Due to cooler temperatures and some precipitation, as of 12:00 midnight August 5, the Siuslaw National Forest changed from an Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) III to an IFPL II. However, Public Use Restrictions regarding campfires remains in effect.

August 6, 2003: Siuslaw Watershed Basin One of Five Finalists for International Riverprize Award
The Thiess International Riverprize nominating committee has selected the Siuslaw River Basin Restoration project as one of five rivers worldwide to compete as a finalist for the prestigious Riverprize in Australia this September.

August 1, 2003: Campfire Restriction in Siuslaw National Forest Increases
The Siuslaw National Forest enacts additional public use restrictions Sunday at midnight. These restrictions will be in effect on the areas, roads and trails within the Siuslaw National Forest as follows:

July 26, 2003: Siuslaw Resource Advisory Continues to Meet to Recommend 2004 Projects
Members of the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) will meet July 31 in Florence to continue their recommendation process for fiscal year 2004 projects.

July 18, 2003: Siuslaw Fire Precaution Level & Regulations
Due to increasing forest fire danger an Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) II will go in effect on the Siuslaw National Forest at midnight tonight.

July 14, 2003: Mapleton & Waldport Ranger Districts and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Offer Matsutake Mushroom Permits
The Mapleton and Waldport Ranger Districts and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area of the Siuslaw National Forest will jointly offer one hundred (100) six-month Commercial Matsutake Mushroom permits by a sealed bid auction held on August 19, 2003 at 1:00 pm.

July 11, 2003: Siuslaw National Forest Enacts Fire Regulations
Due to increasing forest fire danger on the Oregon Coast and throughout the West, the Siuslaw National Forest will be implementing special fire regulations beginning Saturday, July 12, 2003.

June 27, 2003: Tidepool Discovery Days Comes to the Oregon Coast
Take advantage of some of the lowest tides of the year at “Tidepool Discovery Days” July 12-13, 2003 at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and Heceta Head State Scenic View Point.

June 23, 2003: Siuslaw National Forest Wins the Triple Crown
Employees of the Siuslaw National Forest and their partners recently received three national awards for their work in natural resources within the Forest and surrounding communities.

June 13, 2003: Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee Recommends 2004 Projects
By recommending thirty-two projects on June 5, members of the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) put $1.5 million towards national forest management for 2004.

June 6, 2003: Siuslaw National Forest Declares Fire Season
Summer has arrived, which means longer days and warmer temperatures. As the temperature continues to climb so do concern for forest fires.

June 2, 2003: Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee Meets to Recommend 2004 Projects
Members of the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) will meet June 5 in Florence to recommend spending up to $1.4 million on projects designed to improve natural resources on federal lands in Coos, Douglas, Lane, Lincoln and Tillamook counties.

May 19, 2003: Alcohol Ban in Effect Memorial Day Weekend
People planning to visit either Sand Lake Recreation Area or the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend are reminded that possession of alcohol in off-highway vehicle riding areas is prohibited.

April 29, 2003: Alcohol Ban Begins May 1
Siuslaw National Forest officials want to remind people planning to visit either Sand Lake Recreation Area or the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area that possession of alcohol in off-highway vehicle riding areas is banned beginning May 1.

April 17, 2003: Forest Service Will Honor Golden Eagle Passports
As part of a move to simplify recreation fees across the nation, the Siuslaw National Forest will begin honoring the Golden Eagle Passport starting April 18th 2003. Visitors can now use one pass—the Golden Eagle Passport--for all federal recreation sites nationwide. This includes recreation sites operated by the Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

March 28, 2003: Volunteers Sought for Scenic Sites
Do you enjoy meeting travelers from across the country and around the world? Would you like to watch a child's face light up when they discover the amazing creatures living in tidepools? If you have at least four hours a week that you would like to spend sharing your knowledge of the Oregon Coast, the Siuslaw National Forest has opportunities for you as a volunteer naturalist.

March 27, 2003: Mary's Peak Road Opens April 1
The road to the top of Marys Peak is clear of snow and will be open to the public on April 1. Road maintenance crews from the Siuslaw National Forest have cleared the road of rocks, limbs and other winter debris this past week, providing safe access to this popular locale.

March 12, 2003: Citizens Sought for Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committees
The Siuslaw National Forest is seeking nominees for three positions on the Siuslaw Resource Advisory Committees (RAC) under Section 205 of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-393). Specifically, categories lacking representation within the Siuslaw RAC include replacement members for categories one and two, and a school official or teacher for category three.

March 5, 2003: Siuslaw Forest Initiates Alcohol Ban
As part of a plan to provide for a safer off-highway vehicle recreation experience, the Siuslaw National Forest is banning alcohol possession in off-highway vehicle riding areas in the Sand Lake Recreation Area and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.
