Nicholas
L. Smith, PhD, is the Director of the Seattle ERIC
and is also an Associate Professor of Epidemiology
at the University of
Washington. His research interests include cardiovascular
pharmaco and
pharmacogenetic epidemiology, clinical epidemiology,
and health
services
research. He has been involved with VA-based
epidemiologic and health services research for
over a decade.

Thomas
D. Koepsell, MD, MPH, is Associate Director
of the Seattle ERIC. Dr. Koepsell is Professor
and former
Chairman of the Department of Epidemiology
at the University of Washington and has a joint
faculty appointment in the Department of Health
Services. Trained as an internist and epidemiologist,
Dr. Koepsell has served on the VA Cooperative
Studies Evaluation Committee and study sections
for NIH and AHRQ. He has conducted an active
epidemiologic research program for over 25
years, with over 300 published articles and
several major grants, and is co-author (with
Dr. Noel Weiss) of a standard textbook on epidemiologic
methods. Dr. Koepsell's research interests
include the epidemiology of non-infectious
diseases, principally injuries and neurologic
diseases, and applications of epidemiologic
methods to health services and clinical research.

Edward J. Boyko, MD, MPH, is former
Director of the Seattle ERIC. He has devoted the last
20 years to epidemiologic research focused on several
acute and chronic diseases, as well as epidemiologic
methods, particularly the assessment of diagnostic tests.
Dr. Boyko is a Staff Physician in general internal medicine
at VAPSHCS. He has broad experience in conducting epidemiologic
research on veteran and non-veteran populations requiring
both primary data collection and secondary data analysis.
He has a particular interest in the epidemiology of type
2 diabetes mellitus and its complications. Dr. Boyko
brings to ERIC an extensive knowledge of epidemiologic
research, familiarity with VA clinical systems and awareness
of the clinical concerns of veterans and VA administrators. eboyko@u.washington.edu
Michael
K. Chapko, PhD, serves as co-investigator
and database coordinator for the Seattle ERIC.
Dr. Chapko is a Research Professor of Health
Services at the University of Washington, Associate
Director of the VA NW Hepatitis C Resource
Center, and investigator with the VA NW Health
Services Research & Development Center
of Excellence. Dr. Chapko has 25 years research
experience including 5 years as Director of
a the VA Cooperative Studies Program Coordinating
Center. His research interests include hepatitis
C, ambulatory care, long-term care, and cost-effectiveness

Charles
Maynard, PhD, is a Research Professor in
the Department of Health Services at the University
of Washington. Dr. Maynard's expansive research
background spans sociology, epidemiology, and
health service delivery. His research focus
is on cardiovascular disease, particularly
as it relates to procedures and treatments. cmaynard@u.washington.edu
Alyson Littman, PhD is a Research
Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University
of Washington and an affiliate Assistant Member at the Fred Hutchinson
Cancer Research Center. Her research focuses on physical activity and
obesity and prevention of chronic disease risk. Specifically, she is
involved in studies and proposals which investigate yoga as a possible
adjunct intervention for weight loss and weight loss maintenance, yoga
to reduce fatigue and improve quality of life in breast cancer survivors,
and physical activity promotion interventions in people with physical

Patrick
Heagerty, PhD, is the Seattle ERIC's Senior
Biostatistician. Dr. Heagerty in a Professor
in the Department of Biostatistics at the University
of Washington. His research
interests focus on regression techniques for
dependent data. Specific areas of interest
include semi-parametric regression and estimating
equations, marginal models and random effects
models for longitudinal data, dependence modeling
for categorical time series, and Hierarchical
models for categorical spatial data. Other
interests include statistical computing and
applications in epidemiology and ecology.
Jack Goldberg, PhD, MA, is Research Professor in
the Department of Epidemiology in the School
of Public Health and Community Medicine
at the University of Washington and Lead
Epidemiologist and the Interim Director of
the Vietnam Era Twin (VET) at the Seattle
VA Epidemiologic Research and Information
Center. He obtained his undergraduate degree
in Geography and History from the State University
of New York at Binghamton, a Master of Arts
in Geography from the University of Chicago,
and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University
of Illinois-Chicago. He served as Lead Epidemiologist
at the Hines VA Cooperative Studies
Program Coordinating Center, developing and
maintaining the VET Registry from 1983-2001.
From 1985-2001 he served as a faculty member
in the Division of Epidemiology at the University
of Illinois-Chicago, School of Public Health.
He is an elected member of the American Epidemiological
Society, and a Fellow of the American College
of Epidemiology. He is currently a member
of the Twins Committee of the Institute of

Jason Dominitz, MD,
MHS, is an Associate Professor
in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department
of Medicine at the University of Washington
School of Medicine, and Director of the VA Northwest
Hepatitis C Resource Center. Dr. Dominitz’s current research
interests include the epidemiology of gastrointestinal
malignancies (especially colorectal cancer)
and hepatitis C, and health services and
pharmacoepidemiologic research using administrative
databases. He is particularly interested
in colorectal cancer screening and treatment,
as well as racial disparity in health care

Administrative Staff Phillip
Terry, MHA, is Assistant Director
of the Seattle ERIC. As lead administrator
his responsibilities include personnel, fiscal,
grant, contract and facility management, intra/inter
organizational liaison, strategic planning
and program development. He has extensive collaborative

Carrie L. McCloud-Gehring, CPS, is
the Program Assistant and web master for the Seattle ERIC. She earned
her AAS degree from Phillips Jr. College in December, 1996. Her responsibilities
include administrative support and maintaining this web site.

Research Staff
Chris Forsberg, MS, is a Biostatistician
at the Seattle ERIC. His work at the Seattle ERIC is to help design
and conduct analyses in collaboration with ERIC and VET Registry
investigators including CSP#569. Additionally, he assists with the
data management needs of the VET Registry and CSP#569. His current
statistical research involves work on the estimation of ROC surfaces. Christopher.Forsberg@va.gov
Jeff Rodenbaugh, BS, is scientific
programmer in the ERIC core. His experience as a scientific programmer
includes data base development, management, programming, linking

Jen
Sporleder, BS,
is the Quality Improvement Specialist
for the ERIC Core and the Program Manager
for
the Vietnam Era Twin Registry. As such, she
assists researchers in interpreting and
complying
with the myriad
of VA, federal, and state rules and regulations
pertaining to human subjects’ protections
in research. In accordance with these guidelines,
she assists projects in developing SOPs,
policies, and operation manuals. Her research
experience includes project management of
multi-site, database, and women veterans'
studies. She is also experienced in tracking
database
development, management, and programming.
Ms. Sporleder also serves on the UW IRB's
Committee VA. vetr@va.gov
Idamay Curtis, Project Manager, CSP#569, The Course and
Consequences of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome
in Vietnam Veterans.
She earned her degree at the University of
Calgary, and has joined the ERIC team after
four years as research coordinator for Stephan
D. Fihn and David H. Au in Health Services

Esther Joneson, MA, is the VET Registry Human Subjects
Coordinator. Ms. Joneson ensures that the Registry and its studies
are in compliance with all human subject protections. Ms. Joneson
prepares applications, renewals, and modifications to be submitted

Alaina Mori, BA, Research
Coordinator, Vietnam Era Twin Registry. She
earned her BA through University of Washington
in 2007. She has gained research experience
through the Behavioral Research and Therapy
Clinics and the University of
Washington Center for Anxiety & Traumatic
Stress. She assists with the day to day function

Melyssa Tsai, BA, is a Research Assistant
for the Vietnam Era Twin Registry and assists with the CSP#569
