Pregnant women exposed to individuals with herpes zoster can be reassured
that localized herpes zoster in an immunocompetent host is only contagious from
direct contact with open lesions. Management of herpes zoster is discussed in
detail separately; however, immunocompetent adults under the age of 50
generally are not treated unless they have ophthalmic involvement.
