The Mt Hood Information Center can access the
above web sites. The Mt Hood Information Center is located on Hwy
26, 11 miles east of Sandy OR. It is open 7 days a week. (503)622-7674
Avalanche Safety
Areas of the mountain are prone to avalanche. Always assess avalanche
conditions before traveling through terrain capable of sliding.
Keep an eye out for AVALANCHE STATEMENTS posted on the NWAC web
site listed above. Remember that official avalanche statements
pertain only to the areas below 7,000 feet. Climbers must be prepared
to evaluate the hazard on the route chosen to climb.
Precautions
- Weather conditions change rapidly on Mt Hood and all backcountry
travelers should be aware of the current avalanche danger and
weather forecast.
- Practice with map and compass in good weather so that you will
be prepared to use them if the weather turns poor.
- Climbing is not recommended during poor weather or periods forecast
to be poor.
Remember
- Leave your route and return time with someone at home.
- WILDERNESS PERMITS are REQUIRED year round. They are free and
self-issued 24-hours a day at the Climbers' Register at the Timberline
Day Lodge and at the Tilly Jane Trailhead.
- Be sure to SIGN OUT UPON YOUR RETURN.
- Consider renting and using a MOUNTAIN LOCATOR UNIT.
- Use blue bags for solid human waste and toilet paper.
