Understanding Disparities in Perinatal Health and Birth Outcomes: Emerging Trends and Perspectives
Monday, May 8, 2006, 2:00-3:00 p.m., Eastern Time

Overview

Improving understanding of health disparities from the earliest stages of life is critical to national efforts to improve the health of individuals of all ages. This DataSpeak program, sponsored by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), will contribute to ongoing discussions and explorations of the underlying causes and complex factors contributing to health disparities in perinatal health and birth outcomes which affect lifelong health. Senior researchers from the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California at San Francisco’s Center on Social Disparities in Health will discuss national trends, as well as the medical and non-medical factors, relating to disparities in perinatal health and birth outcomes.

This DataSpeak is the first in a series of two that will address disparities in perinatal health and birth outcomes. The second event (date to be announced shortly) will address new approaches in improving perinatal health and birth outcomes and describe and share early findings from a pilot of the Perinatal Health and Patient Safety Collaborative, part of the HRSA Bureau of Primary Health Care’s (BPHC) broader Disparities Collaboratives Program.
