Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents
April 4, 2002

Overview

Since 1980, the prevalence of overweight and obese children and adolescents in the U.S. has nearly doubled. This program will discuss data and issues related to this important public health issue. Dr. Van Hubbard of the National Institutes of Health will provide highlights of trends in childhood overweight and obesity and strategies for addressing this issue.

In addition, to highlight the importance of physical activity as a means for preventing and reducing childhood obesity, Dr. Bonnie Spear of the University of Alabama at Birmingham will describe the Bright Futures guidelines for promoting physical activity among children and adolescents.
