Land Conveyance & Transfer
On November 26, 1997, Congress passed Public Law 105-119, the Departments of Commerce, Justice, and State, the Judiciary, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. Section 632 of that law directed the Secretary of Energy to convey or transfer parcels of Department of Energy (DOE) land in the vicinity of Los Alamos National Laboratory to the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and to the Secretary of the Interior, in trust for the Pueblo of San Ildefonso. Such parcels or tracts of land were required to meet the suitability criteria established by the law:
In 1998, the DOE identified 10 tracts of land totaling approximately 4,800 acres for potential transfer to the County of Los Alamos or to San Ildefonso Pueblo. These 10 tracts of land have been further divided into 27 sub-parcels for transfer purposes. See map. As of November 30, 2004, eight sub-parcels (approximately 104 acres) have been conveyed to the County of Los Alamos, and two sub-parcels (approximately 2,105 acres) have been transferred to the Secretary of the Interior in trust for the Pueblo of San Ildefonso. Of the remaining 17 sub-parcels, three have been deferred (approximately 610 acres) because they have been determined to be critical to the current mission of the Laboratory. Fourteen sub-parcels are scheduled for conveyance or transfer before November 26, 2012. |
