Understanding the Circle
Representing the fullness of living and experience, one of the most meaningful symbols of Native American life is the circle or hoop. The hoop symbolizes the never-ending circle of life which begins at birth, proceeds through childhood and adolescence, and continues into adulthood, old age, and finally death.
The circle continues unbroken, with rebirth on Earth or in the spirit world. This concept is an integral part of the symbolism of the Medicine Wheel which has been chosen by the Indian Health service to depict its commitment to Indian health. The Medicine Wheel is divided by four bars representing the four cardinal directions and all of creation which dwells in these regions.
The West represents the point of all beginnings, the North is the natural law and truth, the East is knowledge, and the South represents the traditional place of healing.
