The National Police Challenge – 50 Kilometer Relay is run on behalf of two very special law enforcement charities both, of which provide assistance to the families of officers who are slain in the line of duty. All net proceeds, after expenses, are divided between the two 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organizations.

Across the United States, approximately 700,000 sworn officers put their lives on the line each day to protect and serve the American public. One of these law enforcement officers is killed nearly every other day.

Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) was organized in 1984 to serve “spouses, children, parents, siblings … and affected co-workers of officers killed in the line of duty.” COPS offers several resources to help survivors rebuild their lives, including:

H.E.R.O.E.S. LogoHEROES, Inc.
(Honor Every Responsible Officer’s Eternal Sacrifice)

HEROES, Inc. was founded in 1964 by a group of Metropolitan Washington businessmen with the singular goal of assisting the widows and children of law enforcement officers and firefighters who give their lives in the line of duty. The organization has no paid employees or staff and zero administrative costs. One hundred percent of all donations are used to directly benefit the families of the officers who have given their lives in the protection of the greater Washington, DC community and our nation’s capitol. In all, nearly 80,000 officers in the Washington area are protected by the HEROES, Inc. program.

HEROES confidentially provides funds for the immediate needs of a slain officer’s family, as well as additional funds for funeral expenses. In addition, HEROES provides full college scholarships for the children of slain officers. Scholarships include room and board, tuition, books and fees for four years of undergraduate education.
