EXTERNSHIPS IN GCIL

GCIL's Summer 2008 externship vacancy has been filled. The office is now considering externship applications for the Fall of 2008 and thereafter.

At present there are no funds for a paid externship. However, the office considers candidates for a volunteer legal externship on a rolling basis throughout the year. The unpaid externship is generally at least 8-10 weeks in duration; start dates are flexible. In the past, externs have engaged in research and writing and attended inter-agency working group meetings at the U.S. Departments of the Interior, State, Defense, Homeland Security, Transportation, and Commerce, as well as at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The office strives to ensure that each extern has an opportunity to complete a minimum of one substantial writing assignment. The ideal candidate will have a strong research and writing background as well as a demonstrated interest or experience in international environmental law, oceans law, and the Law of the Sea.

NOAA's Office of Education web site has additional information on other student opportunities available throughout NOAA.

The Department of Commerce (of which NOAA is a part) has two web sites providing additional resources: job career opportunities and student career opportunities.

GCIL EXTERNSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS:

Submit cover letter, resume, transcript, and writing sample of no more than five (5) pages to Alma Lyons and Ole Varmer by electronic mail or fax at 202/371-0926. Your cover letter should indicate prominently the time frame of the proposed externship and explain clearly your interest in international environmental law and oceans law. Candidates may be contacted for additional information and/or for an interview. The office is not always able to respond to every application.
