The Cure for Trachoma Discovered at
the Rosebud Indian Hospital, 1937
This year’s IHS History presentations
will focus on the breakthrough events
made by the Bureau of Indian Affairs
and the U.S. Public Health Service in
trachoma and tuberculosis.
The presentations will use newly
discovered historic photos and
documents from the National Archives
and individual donations to tell these
forgotten stories in Indian health history.
Bring a lunch and join us in the

Lt. Governor Jefferson Keel, of the Chickasaw Nation, is serving his second term as First Vice President of the National Congress of American Indians. Lt. Governor Keel began his 25-year distinguished military career in 1964, when, at the age of 16, he enrolled in the National Guard and in 1966 enlisted in the Army. He has won numerous awards and decorations, including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. He has served the Chickasaw Nation as Director of Tribal Social Services and Community Assistance Departments, as Policy Administrator, and as
Special Assistant for Cultural Affairs. |
Mr. Mark Trahant, a member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe, is a nationally recognized journalist. Mr. Trahant is the editorial page editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, chairman of Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, and author of Pictures of Our Nobler Selves, a history of American Indian journalists. A finalist for the 1989 Pulitzer Prize in national reporting for co-authoring a series on Federal Indian policy, Mr. Trahant has won numerous journalism awards.
