Government Information Locator Service (GILS): Hosting

The U.S. Government Printing Office can help you meet your GILS mandate by making your Government Information Locator Service (GILS) records available to the public through GPO Access. Our site currently provides this service for 32 other Federal agencies, who have also chosen to save time and money by allowing GPO to host their GILS records on our servers.

Cost | Forms | Structure of Records | Format of Records | Submitting Records

Cost

GPO will load your agency's GILS database on our WAIS server for a one-time fee based on a cost of $93.00 per hour. The number of hours required to create the database is dependent on the number of GILS records you submit and the format in which they are received.

Cost for ongoing maintenance/storage and user support are paid by the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).

Forms

In order for GPO to begin work on creating your agency's GILS database, you must submit a Printing & Binding Requisition (SF-1) to GPO. This form is also available from your agency's printing officer.

A Request for Reimbursable Services (GPO Form 3650) is also required for ongoing maintenance and storage of your data. To obtain a copy of Form 3650 contact: GPO Customer Contact Center at 866-512-1800, (Toll-free), 202-512-1800, (DC Metropolitan Area), or contactcenter@gpo.gov.

Structure of Records

When creating your GILS records, follow the guidelines set forth in the GILS Application Profile.

Format of Records

GPO requests the following:

GILS records should be provided as ASCII text files, however it is suggested that they be provided in both text and html formats. Save each GILS record as a separate file. Use the same name for the GILS record in both text and html format for example: GILS1.txt and GILS1.htm

(Note: If you want hot links in your records, you must provide HTML files.)

If your records are currently in a different format or you have questions regarding file creation please contact GPO Customer Contact Center at 866-512-1800, (Toll-free), 202-512-1800, (DC Metropolitan Area), or contactcenter@gpo.gov.

Submitting Records

GILS records may be sent on diskette(s) to the following address (Be sure to include the above referenced completed forms):

U.S. GPO
Attn: GILS TEAM
Stop: SDE
732 N. Capitol St., N.W.
Washington, DC 20401

You may also submit your records via FTP or email. For information on submitting via email and FTP contact: GPO Customer Contact Center at 866-512-1800, (Toll-free), 202-512-1800, (DC Metropolitan Area), or contactcenter@gpo.gov.

To submit updates to your GILS records, you may use the same methods listed above.

GILS Mandate

OMB Bulletin 95-01 initiated the creation of a Government Information Locator Service (GILS). GILS is a way to identify, locate, and describe publicly available Federal information resources, including electronic information resources. GILS records identify public information resources within the Federal Government, describe the information available in these resources, and assist in obtaining the information. GILS is a decentralized collection of agency-based information locators using network technology and international standards to direct users to relevant information resources within the Federal Government. For more policy information relating to GILS see OMB Circular A-130 and OMB Bulletin 95-01.
