Indian Health Service pharmacy has pioneered many progressive and innovative services over the past 30 years. We were recently recognized by the APHA and HCQA awarding the Pinnacle award to the Pharmacy program of Indian Health Service for best system in the U.S. Pharmacists have direct access to the patient’s medical record including laboratory tests, immunization status, past visits and medical history to assess the appropriate of drug therapy before dispensing medications. Coordination with physicians is excellent and all potential problems are resolved with the provider before dispensing. All patients are counseled about their drug therapy in a private room to assess their understanding of their drug therapy. In some locations, pharmacists are credentialed to provide primary care and therapeutic monitoring to improve patient outcomes and reduce therapeutic misadventures. In our inpatient sites, pharmacy services include unit dose, IV additive, pharmaco-kinetics, physician rounds, drug information and education of staff and patients.
