Maternal-Child Health refers to the health of, and the delivery of health care services to,
women and children. Some of the issues related to maternal child health include contraception
(birth control), family planning, pregnancy, obstetrics, midwifery, gynecology, menopause,
peri-menopause, infertility, incontinence, cancer, newborns, infancy, childhood, adolescence,
development, immunizations, infectious disease, nutrition and birth defects. The quality of
health care provided to women and children in the Phoenix Area is monitored and compared to
national standards and goals.

- Recruitment of Technologists and Radiologists at local, state and national levels.
- Continuing Education programs with approved credit hours through national organization.

Phoenix Area is implementing video conferencing capability to provide more effective and
efficient consultations (clinical and administrative) between the service units, Area Office,
federal/state/private organizations and ITSC. Video conferencing implementation will provide
enhanced Distance Learning, CME, and Tele-Health applications throughout the Phoenix Area and
IHS. Twelve video conferencing units have been distributed and tested at the Phoenix Area Office,
service units, and Desert Visions Regional Treatment Center. The video conferencing bridge
installation will enable all facilities and the Area Office to conference simultaneously within
the Phoenix Area intranet and provide the capability to video conference with federal, state,
and private organizations outside the IHS intranet.
Phoenix Area has taken a leading role to implement and ensure a telecommunications
infrastructure is available to support service units and facilities implementing Tele-Health
modalities (Tele-Radiology, Tele-Dermatology, Tele-Psychiatry, etc.). Phoenix Area is actively
collaborating with the Arizona Telemedicine Program (ATP), Navajo Area IHS, University of Nevada
School of Medicine, University of Nevada- Las Vegas Information Systems Department and the
Information Technology Support Center (ITSC/HQW) on network infrastructure upgrades, Tele-Health
services/support and digital imaging archive solutions. Tele-Health applications provide for
increased patient access and clinical staff resources not previously available due to the rural
locations and limitations of IHS and tribal facilities.
